About John Stevens of Killingworth

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stevens-4961

John Stevens was born on 10 March 1660/61, Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut, and was therefore just a young child when the family moved to and became among the first settlers of Killingworth, Connecticut. He was mentioned in the 1670 will of his grandfather, who bequeathed 5 pounds to him. At 15 years old he may have been a volunteer for service in King Philip's War (1675-1676), drawing lots in Voluntown (near the Rhode Island border), Connecticut, for his service. It is possible that it could have been a relative named John.

He married Abigail Cole (1666-Bef. 1727), daughter of Henry Cole and Sarah Rusco, in 1684.

They had 10 children:

  1. Phebe;
  2. Peter;
  3. John;
  4. Joseph;
  5. Ebenezer (1695-unknown);
  6. Dorothea;
  7. Henry;
  8. William;
  9. Abigail and
  10. Phebe.

John Stevens had his cattle mark registered at Killingworth (Land Records, Volume I, page 84) on 23 November 1685: "a hole in the off yeare and a slit in the near year on the top of the year." After his father died in late 1685, John's brothers divided up their father's land, but John chose to take his share in cash (16 pounds, 16 shillings, 6 pence).

There are a number of land records bearing his name. He sold a piece of upland meadow to Augustine Williams on 06 September 1688 (Land Records 1:130). There are two deeds from him to Joseph Kelsey in 1705 (Land Record, Volume II, pages 18 and 19), the second one also signed by the mark of his wife Abigail.

Several entries in Land Records Volume 1:142 have land recorded to John Stevens: a part of his father's legacy and ordered to be recovered by his brother James (Administrator of the estate)---7 acres of upland on the highway that goes to the mill, also on the long hill, half of the lot that was his father's 5 acres bound north on Joseph Stevens; also half the meadow on the east side of town that was his father's, 1/75 acres; 61.5 acrse of upland above the head of the hogg plaine, surveyed on 08 February 1708/09; three acres of upland on the north side of the Manunquetset River against James Stevens' land, surveyed on 06 July 1713.

Administration of John Stevens' estate is found in four documents (Records of Guilford Probate District): (1) a request to the probate court (date 19 March 1722/23) to have administration granted on the estate in order to pay the creditors (request by 3 creditors: Abraham Pierson, Joseph Kelcey, and John Shether); (2) An order from the same court on the same date to John Stevens' widow and 3 of his sons, which advised them to appear in court on the third Tuesday of April in order to take administration, or have it granted to one of the creditors; (3) Bond of Ebenezer Stevens (son) as administrator of the estate; and (4) an Inventory of the Estate of John Stevens Cordwinder, Late of Killingworth, taken by Ebenezer Stevens, Edward Rutty, and John Kelcey, on 16 September 1723: Impris sixty acres and three quarter sof woods", valued at 16 shillings per acre (48 pounds, 12 shillings). When John died (intestate), he still had a mortgage on this land of six pounds, and he also had other debts totalling 30-40 pouinds. Thus the value of this piece of land was almost negated by his debts. Presumably his personal property was distributed among the widow and children.

John died in 1722 in Killingworth, Connecticut, and his widow Abigail remarried to John French and died before 1727.
