Research Notes

Profile protected to preserve Steward spelling. When researching a newly adopted profile (Stuart-377), it appeared the correct spelling would be Steward (born in England, not Virginia, and earlier than the birth year given in the profile when adopted). The profile had death in 1703 in Henrico. Bristol Parish, Virginia, served Henrico County. A contemporary record exists showing a John Steward Jr. in Henrico County in 1697 (whether this John or a son is not clear, but probably a son).

There is a date conflict for the 2 marriages of this John Steward, Sr. ...

- m1: Dorothy presented as his "relict" in his 1706 estate papers
- m2: 02 Oct 1686 Susannah Burton.
John Steward, Jr. was guardian to "orphans" of Thomas Burton (came of age in 1699)
John Steward, Jr. died c1714 and his last Will mentioned ...
- mother Dorothy, still living
- 3 children ...
- John Steward, III, m: Michal=Michelle Ballow=Ballou
- Daniel Steward, m: Elizabeth Farloe
- Sarah Steward, m: William Frasier.

Notes

  • John Steward, Jr. was guardian to "orphans" of Thomas Burton (came of age in 1699)
  • John Steward, Jr. died c1714 and his last Will mentioned ...

  • - Sarah Steward, m: William Frasier.
  • The Burton children would be of John Jr’s stepmother Susannah (d 1699). Her children were biologically Hatcher, adopted Burton.
  • His ‘mother’ Dorothy living in 1714 would then have to be his father’s 3rd wife.

  2. Sarah (Steward) Frazier, b: 1661
  3. Daniel Steward, b: c1670; d: 1767; m: Dec 1698 Elizabeth Farley

No known Gaulding connection.

No known Hatcher connection

Susannah Hatcher [6] was NOT the wife of this profile for John Steward.

In one record, John, Jr, refers to Dorothy as his father's wife
In another record of November 1677, Dorothy @32yrs and John @45yrs, gave Depositions. [7] See more below.
On 01 Dec 1699 Susannah renounced dower on 100 acres sold by John Steward to Michael Turpin.
There is a discrepancy in the order or her marriages ...

- Susannah Hatcher (daughter William Hatcher & Mariam Newporte); m1: 1662 Virginia to John Stuart; m2: 1685 Thomas Christian Burton. Per http://www.archive.com
- "John Stewart, b: c1630 m: after Feb 1685" per Hatcher Family Association database for Susannah Hatcher, m1: Thomas Burton; m2: John Steward with no children
From available information, it seems more likely that John Steward, Sr. was Susannah's first husband. And that the John who was racing horses in 1697 was their son John Steward, Jr., [8] and the profiles attached as daughters to duplicates are theirs also ... Elizabeth (b: 1665) & Mary (b: 1680).
