JOHN STEWART OF DALSWINTON
is incorrectly identified as the son of Sir William Stewart of Garlies in Agnew's account of Vaux of Barnbarroch [Henry S. John Stewart of Dalswinton is in fact the eldest son and heir of Alexander Stewart of Dalswinton. In a charter dated 20 October 1477, his father gave him the lands and barony of Dalswinton, in the Sheriffdom of Dumfries.The grant was made in favour of John and his wife, Elizabeth Schaw, and their heir males, whom failing the barony was to return to Alexander and his heirs.This charter was witnessed by Alexander Stewart's brother,Thomas Stewart of Minto [James Balfour Paul, Advocate, FSA Scot., Registrum Magni Sigilli Regum Scotorum.The Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, A.D. 1424-1513, (Scotland's National Archives Reprinted and Presented by the Scottish Record Society in conjunction with Clark Constable, Publishers and Printers, 1984), charter number 1324 on page 270].
