brief biography

Sir Alexander Stewart, of Garlies born Aft. 1420; died Abt. 1500 married Elizabeth Douglas, Dau of Archibald Douglas; born Aft. 1420.

Sir Alexander Stewart of Garlies: "Alexandro Stewart filio et heredi apparenti Wil. S. de Mynto, militis" (Alexander Stewart, son and heir apparent of Sir William Stewart of Minto) and his wife Elizabeth had a charter from his father for the lands of Sinlawis and Merbotillto. The lands were destined to pass to the heirs of Alexander and Elizabeth, or, in the case of Elizabeth's failure, to the legitimate heirs of Alexander himself. A charter of confirmation to this effect was issued under the Great Seal of Scotland on 13 January 1458-59 [James Balfour Paul, Advocate, FSA Scot., Registrum Magni Sigilli Regum Scotorum. The Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, A.D. 1424-1513, (Scotland's National Archives Reprinted and Presented by the Scottish Record Society in conjunction with Clark Constable, Publishers and Printers, 1984), charter number 662 on page 145]. These lands were later settled on his brother, Sir Thomas, who had a charter of them and Minto in 1476.

Sir Alexander was an ambassador to England about 1485. He fought for King James III at Sauchieburn in 1487. Sir Alexander was designated, in his father's lifetime, Alexander of Garlies, which continued to be the chief title of the family until they were made Earls of Galloway. He was ancestor of the Stewarts, Lords Garlies and Earls of Galloway. The Stewarts, Viscounts Mountjoy from 1682, and Earl of Blesington, 1745-1769, in Ireland, also were his descendants.
