In 5 April,1777 at the age of 13 John Jacob Storts enlisted in the Continental Army at Red Hill, Pennsylvania, under Captain Fickle and camped at Valley Forge. By May he was serving the Pennsylvania Continental Regiment of Artillery, Frederick County, Maryland, as a matross. The duty of the matross was to position the cannon and ready it to fire.
