About John Sugar / Shugan, Sr.
John Shugan, Sr., father of Abigail Sugars, came to the Virginia Colony with the Huguenots in 1701. His name on the ships register was written as Jean Boye Sugan. The group first settled in Manakintown, Virginia. This was a former Monacon Indian settlement. It was given to the Huguenots by the King of England. Jean Boye Sugan latter settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Some of the other Huguenots moved into other areas of S.E. Virginia and into bordering areas of North Carolina, especially the area called Bute and Granville counties. The other Huguenot names are still found in that area, such as the plantation "Cascine" which was the sur name of the ship's doctor and his family who came with the Huguenots who settled in Manakintown, Virginia.
