  • Richard of Combe was probably occupier of the land c. 1240 (fn. 140) and William of Combe was mentioned in 1325. (fn. 141) In 1367 Nicholas Orchard may have held an estate called Combe Allen, which was sold in the same year to Richard Sydenham, justice of Common Pleas. (fn. 142) Richard Sydenham died in 1403 and was succeeded by his son Henry (d. before 1427) and Henry by his son John (d. 1468). (fn. 143) The estate was held by John's widow Joan (d. 1472). (fn. 144) Their grandson John Sydenham (d. 1542) settled it on his son Henry (d. c. 1519) and Henry's wife Eleanor (d.1539).

  • A manor of NORTH PETHERTON, which can be traced to a holding of John Sydenham (d. 1468), included houses and lands which Margaret Mutton, probably wife of John's son Walter (d. 1469), held when she died in 1477. (fn. 43) Her son and heir John Sydenham of Brympton held land in Whitestock as a free tenant of Shearston manor in 1519. (fn. 44) In 1613 the Sydenhams' manor, held of the Bluets' manor of North Petherton, included lands in Moorland, Edington in Moorlinch, and Bridgwater, and probably less than half its land lay in North Petherton parish. John Sydenham (d. 1625) settled the manor on his son John for his marriage to Alice Hody, (fn. 45) and it descended with Combe Sydenham in Stogumber until 1674 or later. (fn. 46) No further reference to the lordship has been found and the land was probably dispersed.

  • ==Brympton d'Evercy==
  • Brympton d'Evercy (also known as Brympton House) is a manor house near Yeovil in the county of Somerset, England. .... etc.
  • ==The Sydenham family==
  • In 1430 following a legal battle over disputed titles, the Wynfords sold the estate to John Stourton, lord of the nearby manor at Preston Plucknett, who used it as a dowry for his daughter Joan when she married John Sydenham in 1434. The Sydenhams were said at one time to be England's largest landowners,[17] yet their wealth seems to have fluctuated with each generation.
  • John Sydenham as in infant inherited the estate from his grandmother the original Joan Sydenham (née Stourton). However, at this time Brympton D'Evercy was not the principal family residence. In 1534 John Sydenham made over the house to his son, also, John – having first built the North wing to be his private lodgings for later visits. The new owner John III, was a great landowner bequeathing to each of his many children an estate. This lack of primogeniture proved to be the Sydenham's downfall. John III's successor John IV (died 1585), and his son John V (died 1625) were considerably less wealthy than their forebears, and used the house as their sole residence, the result of which was, despite their comparative penury, they added much to the house. John IV built the present west front thus enlarging the hall, and John V built the large kitchen block. .... etc.

    • Jane Stourton, aged 21 years in 1439, wrongly called Alice in the Visitation for Co. John Sydenham pre-deceased his wife, on the 4th April, 1460, leaving Walter, his son and heir, aged 25(+), and in his Inquisition taken in 8 Edward IV., he was called John Sydenham, senior. Esquire, and Preston Manor was then said to be held of the Honor of Trowbridge. His son and heir, Walter Sydenham, also predeceased his mother, Jane Sydenham, on the 1st May, 1469, leaving John Sydenham, his son and next heir, who was the next heir of his grandmother, Mrs. Joan Sydenham, who was seised in fee, by survivorship, of Brimpton Manor, Church, Chantry, &c., and of which she had enfeoffed certain trustees, viz: — John Chayney, John Byconyll, Robert Hymerford, and others, of the Manors of Brimpton and Alvington, with the Advowson of the Church of Brimpton, and Chantry of the blesssed Virgin Mary of Brimpton, to perform the trusts of her will. It is admitted that her husband acquired Brimpton in her right by marriage temp. Henry VI., and that the fair Manor of Brimpton, according to Mr. Batten, came down to Sir Philip Sidenham, Baronet, whose portrait is in the British Museum, from his ancestor, John Stourton, of Preston, who flourished in the reign of Henry VI. She died 21st April, 1472, and her Inquisition was taken after her death, 31st October following, at Crewkerne, before Thomas Phelipp, Escheator, when she was said to
