About John Taylor, of Wicomico
John Taylor was born c. 1627/8 in England, and died 5 April 1702. His exact date and location of birth are unknown.
Note: Per Carrell's definitive study, he was not the son of John and Elizabeth Taylor of Isle of Wight and Lancaster Counties, as a probate record indicates that the only child of John and Elizabeth Taylor who lived beyond 1669 was their daughter Elizabeth.
Life
Taylor emigrated to Colonial America in 1650, sailing on the Amsterdam to Fleets Bay, off the coast of Virginia. He had already patented land on the eastern shore of Northampton County, Virginia in 1648.
He was a mariner, who owned his own ship "rode in port" at Southampton, Virginia. He is sometimes referred to as "Merchant Taylor"; "Captain Taylor" seems to be a modern invention.
In 1650, he married Alice Gascoyne (or Gaskins), daughter of Thomas Gascoigne and Ann Vavasour. Their children were:
- Thomas Taylor, b. 1650, d. June 1716.
- William Taylor, b. 1652, d. date unknown.
- +John Taylor, b. 1654, Northumberland County, Virginia, d. April 1717.
- +Elizabeth Taylor, b. 1656, d. date unknown.
- Mary Taylor, b. 1660, d. date unknown.
- Lazarus Taylor, b. 1667, d. date unknown.
In 1664, he owned property in Lancaster, Virginia.
