Name: John THOMAS 1 Sex: M Birth: 1614 in Lenham, Kent, England Death: 12 DEC 1671 in New Haven, Connecticut Colony Event: Immigrated on the Hopewell Will: 4 JAN 1669 New Haven, Connecticut Colony Event: Will proved 9 JAN 1671 New Haven, Connecticut Colony Burial: ABT 15 DEC 1671 First Congregational Churchyard, Old New Haven Burying Ground Note:

Many (dozens) of genealogy sites have a Benjamin THOMAS, b. 1584 as our John Thomas' father, but this is obviously incorrect since THAT Benjamin died in 1609 - seven years BEFORE our John was born. Most claim he was born in New Haven, CT as well, which doesn't line up with his son John Thomas (b. 1614) the immigrant, being born in England 6 years before the "Pilgrims" landed at Plymouth Rock.
Some also have a Mehitable FITCH as this same Benjamin's wife - also impossible, since she was born in 1614 - a year BEFORE her supposed husband John was born!
Even others have Benjamin's wife as Abiah Bassett, who also was born waaaay too late (in fact 7 FEB 1657!) which is AFTER her GRAND DAUGHTER Tabitha Thomas was born in February 13, 1652!.
   And still more:
A few have Benjamin's wife as Wilhelmina "Minnie" Amanda VOIGT, born in 1590 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut; died 15 DEC 1671, also in New Haven. I find this questionable, as she died the exact same day as her supposed son John Thomas. This one doesn't fly for yet another fatal reason: the Benjamin Thomas she is married to appears to be the same one mentioned above - who died in 1609, seven years before son John's birth.
   CONCLUSION:
We are not absolutely certain who John THOMAS born 1614's parents are at this point, but I have tentatively put him with John THOMAS & Ann DIGGORY on speculation.

The following was posted on Ancestry.com by jlchipman of Woodbridge, Virginia:
There is a John Thomas who at age 14 immigrated from England to America aboard the "Hopewell" in September of 1635. It is possible that this is our John Thomas (1615-1671), but no one knows for sure.
John Thomas (1615-1671) was born and raised in England. He immigrated to America. It is not known when he immigrated from England to America, but it is believed to have been early and probably before 1640.
John Thomas married Tabitha Charles about 1639. It is not known whether they married in England or at New Haven, CT where they settled to raise their 7 children. It is also not known whether their first 3 children were born in England or at New Haven, CT.
It is known that John Thomas (1615-1671) did not sign the 4 June 1639 Fundamental Agreement that the founders of New Haven, CT signed or below the original signers and that he was probably not at New Haven, CT at that time.
John Thomas (1615-1671) was on the 1669 Freeman list for New Haven, CT. His will was dated 04 January 1669 at New Haven and his estate inventory of 19 January 1672 was for 174 pounds 6 shillings 6 denari. His will named wife Tabitha; sons Daniel and John and Samuel and Joseph; daughters Elizabeth and Tabitha; and grandchildren by daughter Sarah Wilmot. Tabitha Thomas's (1618-1690) will was dated 22 March 1690 and it named son Samuel Thomas (1651-1711) as executor.
Daughter Sarah Thomas (1640-1711) married at New Haven, CT in 1658 to William Wilmot (1624-1689) and they raised 10 children there.

NOTES adopted from Richard M Clark's excellent RootsWeb site:
THOMAS, through the ages, has been a very popular Christian name, particularly during the 13th and 14th centuries. It is a baptismal name in honor of St. THOMAS. The female version was Thomasin or Thomasina. Its English origins came from France, introduced by the Normans after 1066.
Both John and his wife Tabitha were presumably born in England, say about 1615. The exact date of their immigration is unknown but reputed to be sometime before 1640 during the great migration of English people to New England. They settled in New Haven Colony where they may have married. Here their children were born and remained, as did most of their grandchildren - becoming a very prolific family in the area.
John drew up a will on January 4, 1669/70 mentioning his wife and all children. His estate was inventoried on 9 Jan. 1672 and worth £174. 06s. 6d. Tabitha also drew up a will, on 22 March 1690 naming her son Samuel as executor.

John Thomas was an original proprietor of the New Haven colony; was made Freeman 1669.
John Thomas's will is dated 4 Jan. 1670 and mentions wife Tabitha, daughters Elizabeth and Tabitha, daughter Sarah Wilmot's children (unamed), sons Daniel, John, Samuel and Joseph. It was witnessed by William Peck and Roger Alling. The inventory was taken 19 Jan 1672 by Roger Alling and John Cooper and totaled 176 pounds, 6s, 6d.
