About John Henry Thomas
John Henry Thomas, aged 74, died on his farm in Cherokee County, Kansas. He was born Dec. 12, 1842 at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. John married in 1861 Emma Permelia Ross, daughter of Rebecca Smith and Melvin Ross. According to family stories, in the fall of 1864, the family lived in Heber, Utah and when they went to kill their winter meat, they just kept on traveling and arrived in Gallatin, Montana to join Rebecca and Melvin Ross, who had arrived earlier. Here in Gallatin, the family joined the RLDS church. John was baptized Oct 27, 1867 by John E. Reese and confirmed a member by his father-in-law, Melvin Ross. He was ordained an Elder on Nov 24, 1867 by Elder John E. Reese. John moved his family to Pleasant View, Cherokee Co, KS in June of 1870. He served as Branch President during the years of 1874 to 1914, when he resigned on September 26th . The exact date of his death has been lost, as there are three different dates recorded. His death certificate records the date of Jan 5th, his obituary and tombstone records the date as Jan 6th, and church records the date as the 7th. John and Emma were the parents of 9 children: Rebecca, Susan, John, William, Emma, James, Charles, Lettie, and Joseph.
OBITUARY OF John Henry Thomas
John Henry Thomas, 4th son of John Charles and Elizabeth Thomas was born the 12th day of December 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois. He went west in an ox drawn Prairie Schooner, the summer of 1847, when he was 5 years old. He grew up in the west, married and had 5 children when they left Gallatin Valley, Montana, June 15, 1870, and came down the Missouri River to St Joseph, Missouri, where they purchased horses, wagon and harness and went over land in a covered wagon south looking for Turkey Creek in Oklahoma, when they found level land in Cherokee Co, Kansas He grew up in the mountains and did not like the hills in Missouri. They made their home and was received into the Pleasant View Branch of the RLDS Church on August 25, 1870 by letter. He was president of the Branch for 36 years. He baptized many of the grandchildren, neighbors, and friends. He made one trip west when his father's estate was settled. He had a Blacksmith Shop and a saw mill here. He made his living here for 45 years. He passed away on his wife's 74th birthday January 6, 1916. He had pneumonia. Just before his death he go out of bed went to the south door, stood looking his home over for the last time then went to the north door and did the same. Then he went back to bed looked up as if watching something and it stopped, he motioned with his hand for it to come on and just as if he went aboard, and fell back on the bed, he was gone away, his wife explained. Buried in Bird Cemetery, Cherokee County, Kansas.
