About John Thorne, II

29. John Thorne was born about 1665 in Flushing, Long Island, NY. He died in 1736/37 in Chesterfield, Burlington Co., New Jersey. John Thorne, Jr., and Kathryn came to New Jersey from Long Island, New York in 1700 and settled in Chesterfield, Burlington Co where he bought 181 acres of land on August 26, 1717, and was the first Thorne to settle there. John's wife Kathryn was given in the census report of 1698 in Flushing, New York. I have found no record of their marriage or of her family. John, Jr. was known as "Carpenter John".

He was a town officer in 1710 and held various offices until 1749. He bought land in Burlington in August 1717 and both he and his wife made wills. John, Jr. died between 1735 and 1737 at Chesterfield and his will was probated June 14, 1737. His daughters Rebecca Simmons, Kathryn King, Hannah, Sarah, Mary and Deborah and minor sons John, Joseph, Samuel, Benjamin, and Thomas are all named in his will as is his wife Kathryn who was made executor of his estate. His estate totaled 200 pounds and nine shillings.

The will of Kathryn Thorne, dated November 19, 1766, leaves "a silver tankard to my Grandson Humphrey, if he settles on land, but if he should follow the sea, then my son Joseph shall have it." Daughters received their mother's clothing and 1 shilling each. Sons Benjamin and Samuel also received 1 shilling with the remainder of her estate going to son Joseph (also the executor of the estate).

He was married to Catherine Oakley in 1688. Catherine Oakley died in Chesterfield, NJ. Surname is from Jim Johnson at "doublej@penn.comm": OAKKLEIGH PER CHARLES THORNE OF VA. John Thorne and Catherine Oakley had the following children:
