About Joseph Thorn, III
151. Joseph Thorne was born about 1701 in New Jersey. He died in 1774 in New Jersey. Joseph Thorne son of John Thorne, Jr. and Kathryn, was a "weaver of cloth and clothing material" as well as a farmer. He held public office at various times from 1727 to 1753. He was an overseer of highways (Chesterfield Town Records) and he was a faithful Quaker. During the Revolutionary War, in his later days, tradition says that he was beaten with swords by wandering Hessians when he tried to protect his home from them. It is said that he carried the scars to his grave. Joseph inherited the family farm from his father and later married Sarah Fowke.
Will executed 7/15/1774 and proved 3/25/1775.
He was married to Sarah Foulke (daughter of Thomas Foulke Jr. and Elizabeth Curtis) on 3 Jun 1723 in Chesterfield MM, NJ. Sarah Foulke was born on 25 Feb 1702 in Chesterfield, NJ. She died in 1774. Joseph Thorne and Sarah Foulke had the following children:
