HISTORY

According to Tyler Families of Early Branford: "He was a sea captain in our family records and also in Virkus' Compendium. He lived in Branford until he was 56, when he was 'yeoman' in the deeds, and moved to North Castle, Westchester County, New York. John was 38 when his father died in 1712. His share of the estate amounted to 167 acres of third division land, value £135, and also rights worth £18 in undivided lands. John and his brother Peter, according to the will, had previously improved these lands in the third division with housing etc., the value of which was not to be included in the estate. These two brothers divided the third division acreage equally, and their agreement as to the apportionment was made Feb. 22, 1722/3, and recorded, Book 4, page 473, Branford General Land Records. John Tyler and wife Hannah, doubtless with the young ones of their family, moved from Branford to the town of North Castle, Westchester County, Province of New York, in the year 1730... The date of their moving is shown by his places of residence in three deeds in the Branford records..."

Virkus' Compendium states: "Capt. John [Tyler] (b 1674), sea capt.; of Branford, Conn., and New Castle, N.J.; m Hannah Stent." His parents: Peter Tyler and Deborah Swain (daughter of Daniel, who was son of William of England).
