Parents: After an exhaustive search, a source for names of parents for John Vaughan were not found. Previously John Vaughan and Margaret (Pennant) Vaughan were thought to be parents. Finding no source, they have been detached.

Origin: John's origin is often cited as Wales. That's possible, but there's no evidence to confirm this. John Vaughan and the forename Gillian were names common to England at the time.

Wife: John's wife Gillian's surname is speculated to have been Touzar or Tonzar. On December 7, 1642 at the Newport Quarterly Court, a "Gilian Touzar [or Tonzar] is discharged of her Recogniz paying her fees." A footnote reads: "Perhaps identical with the Gillian who was wife of John Vaughn in 1644."[1] Even though it's possible she was John's wife, it's unknown whether Touzar/Tonzar is a birth or married surname. H. Vaughan Griffin, Sr. in "John Vaughan Settled Newport, Rhode Island, 1638..." says on page 1 that Gillian's last name has not been proved." [2]

Locations: H. Vaughan Griffin reports "I have not found anything to substantiate where our John Vaughan of Newport came from, before he settled in Newport."[2] See the Research Notes below for further discussion.

notes

From Chapter 2, John and Gillian Vaughan in Rhode Island

These Rhode Island eccentric and ultra radical Puritans were from of variety of occupations, but most were wealthy merchants. Aquidneck Island was purchased from the Narragansett sachems, chiefs, Caunonnicuss and Miantonomy by Roger Williams and William Coddington. In accordance with the purchase agreement, the Indian inhabitants were required to leave the island before winter of the following year. ....
Roger Williams had said of these men, “These Newport men were more concerned with their own lives, and their financial success, than their spiritual salvation.” This was probably true, and may have had a lot to do with the split from the Hutchinson group.
It is not clear when John left Portsmouth and relocated in Newport or how and when he met Gillian Tonzar. There seems to be no record of her before she married John. There is some belief they were married in Boston, but there have never been any marriage records found to confirm. In the Society of Friends book Birth of Friends Children, kept at the Newport Historic Society library it states that their son John was born in 1644 in Newport. This would indicate that they had moved to Newport by that time. ...
