About John William Veazey, M.D

Dr John William Veazey, son of John Veazey and Elizabeth Gardner, was born 08 May 1825 at Warren County, GA. He married 1st Sarah Ann Rowe 1 jul 1850 in Texas; 2nd Mary Pheraby Lipscomb about 1869. John died 10 sep 1871 at La Grange, Fayette Co, TX; He was noted as a physician in Duncan Veazey's manuscript. He was not mentioned at all in John V Chapman's manuscript. No children are listed in either record. Barbara Barrow King sent the following biographical data in 1993:'Dr John W Veazey studied medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in 1855. There is little information about this life before that time. He evidently came to Texas between that time and 1861, since his record shows he enlisted at age 36 at Camp Rowe (location unknown) on Nov 4, 1861. He was a captain, 1st Company H, 13th Regiment, Texas Volunteers, Confederate States of America. He is described as being 5 feet 11 inches, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, and by occupation, a physician."

After Dr Veazey's death in 1871, Mary and her infant son (7 months old) moved to Flatonia, Texas, where she opened a school and lived for about thirteen years. The four children from his first marriage eventually went to live with other relatives who are no known. In 1885, she and her son moved to Luling to be near her brother, W W Lipscomb, a Luling banker, and other family members.

Dr John Veazey was my great great grandfather. His first wife was Sarah Elizabeth Rowe (not Sarah Ann Rowe). Whether the current marriage cert 7/1/1850 on file in Wharton County to this John W. Veazey and Sarah Elizabeth Rowe is currently open to debate. My great grandmother (daughter of John Veazeya nd Sarah Rowe), Mary William "Willie" Veazey Smith is buried in Belton, TX.
