About John Vining, of Weymouth

 From http://www.stupakgen.net/Genealogy/Beahm/03840_ving.htm

John’s parents are usually given as Robert Vining and Mary, of Wincanton England, owner of the White Horse Inn. I have not seen any old references making this connection -- everyone seems to derive this fact from the 1980 Barnes book. Savage calls him simply John of Weymouth (Mass), and makes no connection to Wincanton England. There would be no problem here, except that the proprietorship of the White Horse Inn passed from Robert to John Vining. Our John came to America in 1652, but the White Horse Inn was still being operated by John Vining after this date, making the connection of our John as a son of Robert rather questionable {wa}. On the other hand, just because the inn was taken over by a John Vining does not necessarily imply that this John is the son of Robert either -- the inn could have been sold to a brother or nephew. Robert Vining’s son John was born in 1636. It is unlikely that he would have taken over the inn before age 16. The best supporting evidence I have found is a statement that John son of Robert Vining, baptised 17 Apr 1636 in Wincanton, is among several emigrants who went to New England about 1651 {f}. So until some other evidence to the contrary is found, we are assuming that the assignment of John as a child of Robert and Mary is correct.
