About John Vinyard, Sr.

Per the "Hilltop Cemetery" article Victoria Cemetery is on part of the John Vinyard farm The historical article stated that John was buried there, John & his wife Jane "Jincy" (Muse) Vinyard brought his family from Boutatourt County Virginia to Jefferson County and she presumably is also buried there although apparently no legible gravestones survive. There was some confusion among family members due to identically named contemporary John Vinyard gravestones in neighboring cemeteries they observed at that time (a half century ago), concluding that his body had been moved from Victoria Cemetery to Hillsboro Cemetery with gravestones both places. There is indeed a John Vineyard headstone in Hillsboro Cemetery without birth or death dates but possible association of John Sr to that cemetery was not acted upon. The Hilltop Cemetery article plus lack of obvious basis for such re-interment leads to a conclusion that these were two diffent John's so the memorial is properly placed in Victoria Cemetery

  -----------------------------------------------------
John Vinyard Senior was born during 1783 in Botetourt County, VA. John ws the 4th of 10 children of Christian & Anne Christina Tabler Vinyard, all born in Virginia between 1775 and 1797. His birth year is estimated based on available evidence
On 10/16/1807 John married Jane "Jincy: Muse (daughter of John & Elizabeth Hayden Muse) )in Franklin County, VA. John & Jincy had 10 children, all born in VA between 1808 and 1828: 1-Muse (Jincy's maiden surname) 2-Elizabeth (after maternal grandmother) 3-Charles C (middle name likely Christian after his grandfather) 4-Delilah 5-John Jr 6-Harriet 7-William 8-George Tabler (Tabler after paternal grandmother surname) 9-Leroy 10- Andrew Jackson
In 1828 or 1829 John and his siblings decided to "go west". Along the way they stopped in Knox County, TN because some of John & Jincy's children became ill with the measles. While there, on 12/24/1829, oldest son Muse married Elizabeth Dearmond. John and now young adult Muse were enumerated there on the 1830 census. Muse may have remained longer in TN but we know that most of John's family had continued onward to Jefferson County MO by 1/24/1835 when Charles C's daughter Catherine was born John died prior to 9/21/1847 when Jane was named guardian of their orphaned granddaughter Hettabelle "Hetty"Hinson (child of Harrison & Harriet Vinyard Hinson ). The 1850 census found his 60 year old widow Jane Vinyard heading a household with their three youngest sons, widowed daughter Elizabeth Johnson and orphaned Hetty Hinson. Jane had been appointed guardian of her granddaughter Hetabelle on 9/21/1847 so John had died prior to that date. He is believed to have been been buried in Victoria Cemetery beneath one of the field stones or headstones with currently "illegible" inscriptions near the rest of his family
