About John Alexander Walker, I

RESEARCHERS BEWARE: George Walker is not the correct parent of John Alexander Walker. His parents are unknown: he was of the Wigton Walkers from SCOTLAND. George Walker's descendants are well documented by the Certification of Walker Families by International Heraldic Institute, Ltd and John Alexander Walker was NOT one of his sons. • This is a very partial index to the Wigton Walkers more or less according to Source: White, 1902. Current YDNA research seems to show that early Walker genealogists combined two separate lines of Walkers who appeared in Old Augusta near the beginning of the settlement of that area. One line settled on Walkers Creek (Walkers Creek Line) in Bordens Grant, and the other around Natural Bridge (Natural Bridge Line. The two lines intermarried at an early date. Early genealogists apparently assumed these were "cousin marriages", and the distinction between the two lines seems to have been lost by about 1840. In her treatment of the family line, White continued with the interpretation that there was but a single, monolithic line of Walkers tracing descent from a common ancestor, John Walker I =Jane McKnight of Wigton Scotland. In truth, given the nature of the surviving original source documentation, White would have had little or no way to discern that two separate lineages were being conflated. It was not until the advent of YDNA analysis that the few clues remaining could be properly interpreted to separate out these two lines.

Currently, we do not know which of the two lines (if either) descended from John Walker I = Jane McKnight.

  • John Walker I of Wigton Scotland, and wife Jane McKnight, are identified in Descendants of John Walker of Wigton Scotland, by Emma Siggins White, 1902 as the ancestors of the Wigton Walker line in America. See Index for other Wigton Walkers.
  • The identification of John McKnight and Jane as the parents of Jane McKnight who married John Walker I, is plausible, but not documented. There was a couple by this name in the Wigtonshire area, about 1680, and could plausibly be Jane's parents. The "Rutherford Bible" cited by White 1902, and apparently passed down through the family of Katherine Rutherford=John Walker II, bears the signature of John McKnight on its title page. John Could plausibly the John McKnight married to Jane, but we do not have any indication that he was the father of Jane McKnight. While its plausible to list John McKnight=Jane as the parents of Jane McKnight=John Walker I, this is conjectural, rather than a proven relationship. Q 16:45, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Source: White, 1902:2 provides our only data we have concerning John Walker I of Wigton Scotland. According to White,
    • 1. John Walker, of Wigton, the first of the name that is known to us, lived and d. as we suppose in Wigton. He m. Jane McKnight ; of their children the names of only two are known to us:
    • 2. John Walker, who married Katherine Eutherford and emigrated, first to Scotland and from there to America. 11 children +.
    • 3. Alexander Walker, brother of the emigrant John, never that we know of left Scotland. He m., but name of wife is not known. The names of only three of his children are known. These three came to America with their uncle, John, and all married and left children +.

  • 1. ↑ DOM is entirely conjectural, based on the marriage of their son John II in 1702, implying that he was born about 1680, implying that they were married before 1680. John II may have been the younger son, which would justify a slightly earlier DOM for his parents. 1677 is as a good as several other dates, but is not surrported by original source documentation.
  • 2. DOB is conjectural. He is believed (source:White, 1902) that he had a son who married in 1702. This implies that the son was born no later than 1680, which implies that John was born at least 20 years earlier. Given a bit of slop in the age at marriage, a c1650 DOB is plausible.

Walkers Creek Line

  • Members of the Walkers Creek Line trace their descent to John Walker of Wigton Scotland. They are included as part of Group 33 of the Walker YDNA project. (Some members of Group 33 trace their descent to Robert Walker of Letterkenny Ireland, a contemporary of John Walker I of Wigton, but whose relationship to John I is unknown.)
  • Group 8 of the Walker YDNA project also trace their descent to John Walker I of Wigton Scotland. These include persons traceing descent through Samuel Walker and Jane Patterson of Natural Bridge Virginia, who settled in the area by about 1750. White 1902 identifies Samuel as the grandson of John Walker I of Wigton Scotland.
  • At this time it is not clear whether Group 33 or Group 8 is in fact descended from John I. Additional research on this point is needed. * Currently, the best case can be made for the Walkers Creek line being descended from John I of Wigton Scotland. Members of this group (specifically, John Walker III=Ann Houston), can be clearly documented to the Nottingham Lots in Old Chester, PA, living in an area now part of Cecil County MD. John Walker II=Katherine Rutherford, John III's parents per White 1902, are said to have lived in this same area. No members of Group 8 have been traced to the same area, so at this point it seems likely that John III is indeed a descendant of John I. Additional work, however, is needed. In particular, information on where Samuel Walker=Jane Patterson were living prior to their appearance in Natural Bridge, is needed.
