John Walton

John Walton (1738–1783) was a Georgia delegate to the Continental Congress. Though born in Virginia, Walton later became a planter near Augusta, Georgia. He was elected as a delegate from St. Paul Parish to the Provincial Congress at Savannah in 1775, and then elected to the Continental Congress in 1778. He signed the Articles of Confederation on behalf of Georgia on July 24, 1778. He held the office of surveyor of Richmond County for several years before his death in New Savannah, Georgia in 1783.

The four children of Robert Walton, Jr., and his wife, Mary Hughes, were:

1. John Walton was bom circa 1743, probably in Goochland County.
John's father willed him 150 acres of land. His guardian, Tucker
Woodson, filed an account in 1760 in the Cumberland County Court,
showing that John boarded with Robert Hughes in 1759. In the August
1763 court, his Uncle George Walton filed an account for renting
orphan John Walton's James River plantations for seven and fourteen
pounds respectively. John moved to Georgia where he married
Elizabeth Claiborne in 1769. Her father, Leonard Claiborne Jr. had
moved his family from Virginia to Georgia. John became a planter near
Augusta, Georgia. Feb. 26, 1778, he was elected to the Continental
Congress, and signed the Articles of Confederation for Georgia on July
24, 1778. He served also as surveyor for Richmond County, Georgia.
John filed a will in St. John's Parish on June 11, 1778, and he was
deceased by Aug. 1, 1783 when his estate was appraised in Richmond
County. His brother George Walton was one of the executors for his
estate. John left descendants. The widow Elizabeth (Claiborne) Walton
married second David Douglas, who was dead by 1791. (40)
