The Watterson family name was changed to Waterson.
"At the time of taking over the Silverstream property, John Watterson, Senr., in signing his name, omitted one "T". This led to so much trouble at law that his solicitor, Mr. Hilderbrand, made him register his name with one "T" (adding the proviso sometimes spelt with two "Ts'). This is not generally known by the descendants, only one "T" being now used by most of them."
John Watterson arrived in New Zealand at Port Nicholson on 17th March 1841, aboard the Lady Nugent , having left Gravesend 21 October 1840.
