JOHN WEAVER was born about 1649, presumably In Newport. He died previous to Feb. 11, 1702-3, but how long before Is uncertain. The date of his marriage, name of his wife and date of her death are likewise lacking. If the New- port records had not been destroyed probably all of these items would be known. In the ledger of Dr. Anthony Wigneron of New- port there is a charge of £1 against Mrs. Martha Weaver, Oct., 1725. Her identity remains unsolved, leaving room for the poss- ibility that she may have been the aged Widowof this John.
He first appears upon record as one of the grantors in the deed of exchange with Gideon Freeborn March 6, 1664, whereby his parents and his brothers, Clement and William, and he received a tract of land in what later became Westerly and gave up a piece of land in Newport which his grandfather, William Freeborn, gave to them. January 5, 1676, he and his brother Clement for £12 gave their uncle, Gideon Freeborn, a second deed of this same land, apparently for no reason except to perfect the title as they could not have been of age when they signed the first one. They called themselves “sonns of Serjant Clement Weavor by Mary his wife, daughter to the deceased William Freeborne of Portsmouth yeo- man, said Weavors being all of Newport.” They describe the land as containing twenty acres, bounded north by the “Comon,” south by WilliamCadman, east by the land ofthe deceased Nathan- iel Browning, west by William Havens and Gideon Freeborn aforesaid, and formerly was given to our mother, Mary Weavor, by her father. John Sanford and WilliamCorrey were the witnesses to this instrument. (Portsmouth Land Evidence 1, 140.)
He was made a freeman of Newport on May 5, 1675. He was one of the soldiers in King Philip’s war as the following shows. The town of East Greenwich, incorporated Oct. 31, 1677, was granted by the General Assembly held at Newport and was to consist of 5,000acres “in the Narragansett Country,” to be divided into fifty equal shares. “And further this Assembly do enact, order and declare, for the services rendered during King Philip’s War, the persons here named . . . . are the persons . . . . who shall. possess the same.” John and Clement Weaver were two of these grantees. There is no evidence that John3 ever lived in East Greenwich. His name is not found in the list of Proprietors in 1700 and he probably sold his grant.
Nov. 3, 1694-,John Weaver of Newport “Talor” sold ten acres in Newport to John Vaughan of Portsmouth, for £74. The names of only two children are known. CHILD: I. Thomas,‘ b. about 1672; m. Mary tioned deed. II.Clement,‘ b. about 1675.
