Biography

Extracted from < WEBB, Sr., John & Ann (Bassett) > by Cliff McCarthy, 2016. Last Updated 2 November 2017.

John Webb, father of our Mary Webb, was born in England, probably about 1615. His origins and parentage are unknown.

According to Fred C. Warner and Harrison E. Webb in an article in The American Genealogist, John Webb was an indentured servant:

“the first record found of John Webb shows that he was released from his master William Parks of Roxbury, Mass., on Jan. 6, 1633/4. If he was then eighteen years of age, he was born about 1615. As a single man, he joined the church at Boston on Mar. 9, 1633/4. He probably lived in Boston for the next ten years, but no evidence has been found that he owned any property there.”

However, Robert Charles Anderson author of the Great Migration Begins is not so sure, commenting:

“The above two records (assuming that they refer to the same man) have been held to be the first appearances in New England of a John Webb later of Boston and then Northampton. In 1947 Fred C. Warner and Harrison E. Webb, having noted the above two items, go on to say “[h]e probably lived in Boston for the next ten years, but no evidence has been found that he owned any property there”. This uncertainty, and the many· years without any evidence of a man who had just been freed, raise doubts about whether these two records do pertain to the Northampton man, and that connection will not be made here.”

Whether or not the father of Mary Webb was the same man as the indentured servant from Roxbury (which I think is likely), we do know that John Webb married Ann Bassett, daughter of John and Margery Bassett, who were Boston residents before settling in New Haven. John and Ann Webb apparently gave birth to their first child, a son named John, at Boston in about 1642. After that John Webb appears in Connecticut as well as Boston.

He was a brazier or “brasier” by trade — someone who works with brass, and usually was called upon to repair pots, pans, and other metal implements. … (continued at https://commonheroes3.wordpress.com/11th-generation/webb-sr-john-an... )

Captives of the French and Indian Wars: Part 1: Captured from New England, by Susan Melanie Colby:

http://fchsm.org/pdf/Captives.pdf

[Elizabeth Price's mother's people, the Webbs, came to New England in 1629. The first Webb to come to the New World was Alexander Webb, II, William Shakespeare's first cousin. With Alexander were his four sons, one of whom was Elizabeth's great grandfather, Richard Webb. - comment: This is an error, disproved. See discussion https://www.geni.com/discussions/252640?msg=1576527 ]

It was in Boston in 1640 that Elizabeth's grandmother, Anne Bassett, married John Webb. The family moved back and forth between Boston and Hartford for the next 14 years. It was during one of their stays at the latter in 1646 that Elizabeth's mother, Sarah Webb, was born. Then in 1654, the Webbs and their seven children became settlers of the frontier town of Northampton (Massachusetts) where John worked as an innkeeper, speculator in real estate, and trader in furs.
