Biography

General Sir John Webbe (c1597-c1680) married Mary Carryl (c1609-c1661) youngest child of John Carryl and Mary Dormer (married 2 Jun 1599) of Warnham, Sussex. They lived in Odstock, Wiltshire. He was made a Baronet of Oldstocke and Great Canford 2 Apr 1644 "as a reward of his family having both shed their blood in the King's cause and contributed, as far as they were able, with their purses, in his defence." They were Roman Catholic. In 1646, his manor, rents, and demesne lands were sequestered, value £300 per annum. Their children's christenings were not recorded in the Anglican Parish Register in Odstock or Salisbury. John's will refers only to his heir, John, youngest daughter Marina, and granddaughter Mary daughter of John.

Disproven descent

Many years ago, a genealogical researcher on the Hudnall Family determined that Mary, wife of John Hudnall (d.1659) of Northumberland County, Virginia, was the sister of Thomas Webb (d.1657) of the same. (See Webb) The researcher then looked for a Webb Family in England that had children Thomas and Mary, born in the early 1600's. He/she found John Webbe and Mary Caryll of Odstock, Wiltshire. As nobility, their family was documented in published pedigrees. Although no years of birth were available, the few years of death that were given indicated children possibly born in the right decade to be the Mary and Thomas of Virginia. But NO documentation of any kind has ever been found to verify this connection.

The fact that the Webbes were Roman Catholic nobility in western England, and the Hudnalls were Protestant yeoman farmers north of London, made a marriage between their families appear unlikely. Searching the Caryll Family found that Sir John Caryll and Mary Catherine Dormer were married at Wing, Buckinghamshire, seat of the Catholic Dormer Family, on 2 Jun 1599. She was only 15 at the time. Their first child, John, was born in 1603. His baptism, along with those of his next three siblings are recorded in either Wing, or in Warnham, Sussex, where the Carylls lived. Mary's baptism has not yet been found, but she is listed as the fifth and youngest child in a Carryl family tree in an appendix to a comprehensive history of the village of Warnham. Logically, she could not have been born before 1609.

Even if Mary Caryll were married to John Webbe of Odstock at 15, in 1624, she could not have been the mother of Thomas Webb of Virginia. Their eldest son, John, the future baronet, would have been born no earlier than 1625. If Thomas were their second child, he would have been born about 1627. Thomas Webb of Virginia was, according to current research, 18 years old when he arrived in Virginia in 1635. This would indicate he was born about 1617. And he owned land in June, 1645, proving that he was then at least 21 years of age, and so born no later than June, 1624. But if he were born that late, he would have been only 11 years old upon arrival in Virginia, and unlikely to have been mistaken for an 18-year-old.

Therefore, Thomas Webb and Mary, wife of John Hudnall, of Virginia, were NOT the children of Sir John Webbe and Mary Caryll of Odstock, Wiltshire.
