Newspaper - The Niagara Falls Gazette, Monday Feb. 12 1940 - Man Hit By Auto Passes At Falls General Hospital - John Thomas Wellman, 54, of 556 Homewood avenue, died at the General hospital yesterday afternoon from injuries suffered last Friday at 12:30 am. when he was struck by an auto on Stanley street driven by William Dobson Jr., 28, of 726 Third avenue . Mr. Wellman suffered a compound fracture of the skull and both legs were fractured. He was walking south on Stanley street on his way home from the Hydro canal where he was employed as a special guard by the Ontario Police and had just come off duty. The auto was going in the same direction. An inquest will be held by the City hall next Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock conducted by Coroneer E.T. Kellam. Following the accident, Dobson was arrested on a charge of reckless driving & remanded until February 16. Mr. Wellman was born in New Carlisle, Quebec, and has lived in this city for the past 17 years. He was a veteran of the world war having enlisted in 1914 with the 26th Infantry battalion at St. John, N.B., and served in the front line trenches for some time. He was severly wounded in the right leg. He was a member of St. Patrick's church & of the Canadian Corps, this city. Surviving is his wife. Mrs. Josephine Wellman; five sons, Alfred, Andrew, George and Wilbert, at home, Joseph, of the Royal Light Infantry, Hamilton, Ont., two daughters. Stella and Corinne, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Archie Dobson, New Carlisle, Que. Mrs. Harry Smollet, Moncton, N B, Mrs. Hugh Long, Campbellton. N. B., Mrs Edmund Ross, Riviere De Loup, Que; two brothers. Henry, of Montreal, and George, of New Carlisle. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock at the family home and at St. Patrick's church at 9 30 o'clock. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery.
