From Carolyn Cosgriff The parish registe

From Carolyn Cosgriff The parish register of Butterwick (Holland), Lincolnshire, Englandrecords the marriage of one James Wells and May Pishye on 28 May 1615.A Mary Pishye (also found spelled as Pushee, Pushey, Pishy, etc) was christened Nov 1594 the dtrof John in the Freiston, Lincolnshire parish; and in that same parisha John Pushee md on 27 May 1588 to Elizabeth Clarcke. John & Elizmaybe had a son named John who md 18 Apr 1616 to Mary Ballard inBoston, Lincolnshire. And a Mary Ballard was chr Dec 1602 the dtr ofJohn Ballard also in Boston. John Ballard md 13 Jun 1596 in Freiston,Lincoln to Isabel Black and these may have been the parents of Mary. The reason these entries look promising to me is that the RobertHubard who imported James Wells had a granddaughter, CatherineHubbard, who was the wife of Thomas Ballard Jr of York Co., VA. Andboth the Hubards and Ballards were close associates (and relatives, Ibelieve) of the earliest Clarks in York Co, VA. Furthermore, there isa Johanna Pishie who md 9 Jun 1600, also in Butterwick (Holland),Lincoln to a John Gibson and their eldest son Thomas Gibson was chrFeb 1601 in St Marys, South Kelsey, Lincolnshire. I believe this wasthe same Thomas who was in York Co, VA by 1639 and had his will provedthere in 1652, he being another close associate of these early YorkCo, VA families.

John Wells " St Olave in York is one of 25 parish churches there. There are lots of Wells in old York but I am far from convinced that the names all come from the one 'Well' village originally - a nice little place. The early York Wells who were members of 'the church' could be from anywhere, often being from titled families - but not the eldest - who got the estates and title.Members of the Licolnshire Wells family lived as far north as Northallerton (after marriage) and others had military ties as far north as Redesdale. I suspect that my Wells may be derived from 'Well'. Between my ancestors farm at Galphay and Well, old maps show 'Lady Wells Plantation'! The Fountains Abbey Lease Book, from which my earliest history comes (Robert Welles of Galphay, lease 1538), was at one time in the ownership of Margery Mistress of le Welles (Lincolshire) of Ripley, Yorkshire. Lionel Lord Welles married into a Yorkshire family at Methley which is not far from my place of Birth in Leeds. Juanita Louise Knapp" St Olave's is the name of a church in York [Yorkshire] and, to confuse you more, there was a family of Wells/Welles there in the Middle Ages! They took their name from Well in Yorkshire and were not related to the Lincolnshire family as I have found no original document which would help prove a connection. St Olive's must have been copied out incorrectly at some time or is a post-Reformation way of referring to St Mary Overie [St Mary over the Water, i.e. on the south bank of the Thames in London by London Bridge]. The original priory which was dissolved at the Reformation is now the site of St Saviour's Cathedral or what is commonly called Southwark Cathedral]. Only one St Olive's church is listed in London. It was in a dilapidated condition prior to the time John Stowe wrote his Survey and was never rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666.

All authoritative records indicate that

All authoritative records indicate that the first progenitors of the Welles family of the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware were James & Mary Welles who arrived in Virginia prior to 1654 [Nugent, Filby].. Page 290 - 291 "On 10 June 1654 John Walton & John Bagnall recieved 3900 acres of land in Westmoreland Co Va for transporting 78 persons to Va including James Welles; Page 300 "On 12 Dec 1654 Robert Hubard recieved 1600 acres on S.side of Petomack River for transporting 32 persons including Mary Welles.". James Welles born abt 1590 in England. Several possibilities for the origin of James have been suggested. Either that he was from Somerset Co., England, or that he may have been the son of Thomas Welles of St.Olaves Church, City of York (son of James Welles baptized 16 July 1629). Both are unsubstantiated and there are certainly many more locations in England where men named James born at the same time period can be found. James Welles died in the year 1669 and was buried in the Marshton Parish burial ground near Williamsburg, Virginia [ChBruton:159, WellsHist:8] It should be noted that the early death records in the Bruton Parish Records are those of persons living in the Marshton Parish [ChBurton 159] The Marshton Parish church was located about four miles from Williamsburg near the Queens Creek in Macgruder Village. An elderly gentleman living in Williamsburg told George Harlan Wells [WellsHist:8] that he lived as a boy on a farm near the location of the Marshton Church and remembers ploughing around some of the old tombstones. Little more is known about this James Welles. There probably were other children but no trace of them have been found. In the early Delaware records the family name is spelled both "Wells" and "Welles" Mary Pyshie married James Welles abt 1615 in England and she died aft 1684 and is buried in the Marshton Parish burial grounds, Bruton Parish York Co.,Va.[ChBruton:159] Children of James and Mary Welles [GreersVa:11 & 159] John Welle s b abt 1620 in England William Welles b abt 1630 George Welles b abt 1640 The parish register of Butterwick (Holland), Lincolnshire, England records the marriage of one James Wells and May Pishye on 28 May 1615.
