Son of John West Sr. and Frances (perhaps Anderson or Osborne).

He was born circa 1738 Prince Georges Co., MD, USA.

He married about 1756-1758 to Rachael Perry, born about 1740 in Montgomery Co., MD, daughter of James Wilson Perry and Rebecca Harris. Her parents had come to Montgomery Co. from Frederick Co.

Their first child, Thomas, appears to have been born about 1758.

31 May 1760, Rock Creek Church, Frederick Co., MD - The birth of their son Reason / Rezin was recorded.

23 Sep 1762, Rock Creek Church, Frederick Co., MD - Their daughter Rebecca was born.

23 Dec 1763, Rock Creek Church, Frederick Co., MD - Their son Simon was born.

29 May 1765, Rock Creek Church, Frederick Co., MD - Their son William was born.

1766 - John was named as an heir of his father John Sr., who mentions in his will "200 acres where John Jr dwells".

John and Rachel may have moved to Virginia as early as 1769.

28 May 1769 - Daughter Priscilla born. One of her children later reported on the 1880 census that she was born in Virginia.

However, if they had already moved to Virginia, they moved back to Maryland or John traveled back and forth on business. It's perhaps more likely that Priscilla talked about her childhood in Virginia and that's what her daughter remembered.

Dec 1771 - May 1772, Frederick Co., MD - John witnessed the will of Rebecca Harris between 11 Dec 1771 and 8 May 1772.

c. 1771, MD or VA - daughter Sarah was born.

1772 - John was grantor in 1772 for the Joseph & Resurvey on Arpos, MD.

c. 1773, MD or VA - daughter Margaret was born.

c. 1776, VA - daughter Martha was born. Her son Richard reported on the 1880 census that she had been born in VA.

c. 1778, VA - son John was born. If Martha was born in VA, then John probably would have been, too.

Oct 1780, Berkley Co., VA - John West Jr. made a claim for payment for supplies he made to the army during the Revolutionary War:

[John's son Rezin would marry Cornelius Duval's daughter Esther, and John's daughter Martha Cornelius Duvall's grandson Maureen (son of Cornelius Jr) in 1795 in Bourbon Co., KY.]

24 Oct 1780 Berkley Co., VA. (Rev War Claim for supplies) Revolutionary War Public Service Claims Duvall, Cornelius John West

1783 Botetourt? Co., VA - Son Reason’s daughter Harriet born.

Oct 1785, Botetourt Co., VA - son Roger was born.

1785 - The first definite record of John in Botetourt Co., VA:

1785, Botetourt County Virginia Court Minutes, County Court November 1785 Cornelius Duvall appointed Surveyor of the road, succeeding John West.

Feb 1787 - Son Thomas West was in Bourbon Co., KY:

Johnson, Thomas, Jr., of Fayette Co. & Henry Garrett of Louisa Co., VA John Smith of Fayette Co. Bargain and Sale A57, A58 & A59 15 Feb. 1787 Charles Allison, Thomas West and Christopher Kaisor 400 acres on North side of South Fork of Licking adjoining the lower side of their preemption;

Thomas was also listed on the 1787 Bourbon Co., KY tax list, along with several other Wests:

Meanwhile, back in Botetourt Co., VA, John and Rachel's daughter Priscilla got married:

11 Aug 1787, Botetourt Co., VA – Their daughter Priscilla married Thomas Eades.

Aug 1788, Bourbon Co., VA - Thomas witnessed a land deed:

Oct 1788, Bourbon Co., KY - Thomas and his brother Rezin sign a petition:

Early History of Bourbon County and Paris by Laura Lilleston, 1939, p. 17 "FIRST PETITION BY THE CITIZENS OF BOURBON COUNTY MADE THE VIRGINIA ASSEMBLY, OCT. 27, 1788 For Inspection of Tobacco on Licking Creek, It Being the Chief Medium of Exchange in Early Days. To the Honorable the General Assembly of Virginia-The Petition of Sundry Inhabitants of the county of Bourbon Humbly sheweth that every other County in the District of Kentucky has been Indulged with the advantages of Publick warehouses for the reception of Tobacco and that your Petitioners Living near the Courthouse and on Licking Creek in the most Populous part of said County, too far remote from either of the other Inspections to remove their Tobacco by land without much labour and expense and your petitioners fully sensible of the Disposition of your Honorable House to do Justice upon all occasions to afford relief to such of the community as you conceive intitled to your patronage we your petitioners therefore pray that an inspection for the reception of Tobacco may be Established on the South fork of Licking Creek and in the fork near Isaac Ruddles Mill which your petitioners conceive will be of Great Utility and of Singular advantage to them provided the article of Tobacco should continue to be of value and your petitioners as in duty Bound will ever pray. [among many signatures] Rezin West [next name] Samuel Kinkade [later in list Andrew Kinkead [later in list] Thos West

Sep 1789, Bourbon Co., KY - Thomas was one of those petitioning for the establishment of the town of Hopewell (later renamed Paris):

PETITION FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF HOPEWELL BY CITIZENS OF BOURBON Signed September 2, 1789 "To the Honorable the Virginia Assembly: The petition of the Inhabitants of Bourbon County Sbeweth that the Land whereon our present Courthouse now stands to the amount of two hundred and fifty acres is laid off in Lotts by the Proprietor, for the purpose of settling a Town which Lotts are principly bought up by those who are now living on and improving them and have erected a number of very convenient buildings-on sd Lotts we your petitioners conceiving it really necessary that sd Town be established by Law pray your Honorable body that a Law pass for the establishment of a Town agreeable to the manner the Lotts are now laid off and that the Trustees be appointed for the purpose of superintenCing and Regulating of the Building of said Town and in duty Bound we pray-" [among many others] Thos. West

Oct 1789, Bourbon Co., KY - Thomas became one of the trustees of the new town Hopewell (later renamed Paris):

Early History of Bourbon County and Paris by Laura Lilleston, 1939, p. 18 "...calling the town Hopewell. In accordance with a request of Protzman the Virginia Assembly passed the following Act October, 1789: "Be it enacted, That two hundred and fifty acres of land, at the Court House in Bourbon county, as are laid off into town lots and streets by Lawrence Protzman, the proprietor thereof, shall be established a town by the name of Hopewell, and that Notley Conn, Charles Smith Jr., John Edwards, James Garrard, Edward Waller, Thomas West, James Lanier, James Littell and James Duncan, gentlemen, are hereby constituted trustees thereof."

26 Feb 1790, Botetourt Co., VA – John and Rachel are still in Virginia, as their daughter Sarah married John Eades there on this date. John was the brother of Thomas Eades, the husband of Sarah's sister Priscilla.

1790 - Sometime between 26 Feb 1790 (when daughter Sarah was married back in Botetourt Co., VA) and Mar 1791 (when John and sons John, Simon, and Thomas were listed on the Bourbon Co., VA tax lists), the family came west to Kentucky. Presumably, they made the trip during the summer of 1790.

They moved with most of their children, probably to give their children the opportunity to buy cheap land and set up on their own. Thomas and John Eades came with them. Rachel would have been at least 52 when they moved out to the frontier and John probably a little older.

They picked a bad time to come to Bourbon County:

[Source: H. E. Everman's The History of Bourbon County, Kentucky, 1785-1865. (Bourbon Press, 1977)] “By the close of the 1780s, settlers were transforming the wilderness. "Buffalo bones covered all the grounds along the Stoner as hunters killed for sport and left the dead carcasses lying where shot". Many must soon have rued this wanton waste, as the severe winters of 1790 through 1793 decimated the animal paradise, killing wildlife and all kinds of vegetation including the formerly prolific cane. Wolves approached the licks, springs, and cabins in those years. Turkey pot pie became a standard fare and one settler "never wanted to eat any more as long as he lived".

John and his sons John Jr., Simeon, and Thomas were listed on the 1791 taxpayers list. They lived in the town of Hopewell (Paris):

1791 Bourbon Co., KY tax lists John West Mar 1791 John West Mar 1791 Simeon West Mar 1791 Thomas West Mar 1791

The severe winters and new hardships seem to have taken their toll on John’s health as he died in late November or early December of 1791. His death was not so sudden that he didn’t have a chance to make out his will on 23 Nov. It was probated in Dec. Rachel, age 51 at least, was left to build their home on the frontier by herself and with the help of her older children. Her youngest child, Roger, was only six years old.

When John West died in 1791 he owned and lived on land adjoining the town of Paris (Hopewell), Bourbon Co., KY. He named only his four youngest children in his will, presumably already having given their shares to the older children as they married and set up households:

Nov Bourbon Co., KY will extracts: (Will Book A, p. 74) WEST, JOHN-A, 74-Wife, Rachel; son, John West, "land I dwell on adj town of Paris"; "my four children, Margaret, Martha, John and Roger West", "daughter Sarah Eades". Will written on Nov. 23, 1791; will probated in Dec. 1791. Robert Eades, mentioned. Wt.: John Allen, W Mathers, R Downing, R Eades.

Thomas apparently became guardian of his younger siblings to look after their financial affairs, but Rachel gave consent to her daughter Margaret's marriage in Nicholas Co., KY (adjoining Bourbon) in Feb 1792.

19 Feb 1792, Nicholas Co., KY - February the 19th 1792 "I do hereby certify that Thomas West my son is guardian to my daughter Margeret---and I also give my consent to her marriage with Tomkins Barlow.  Given under my hand and seal.  Rachel West (seal) Witness Tho Eades

The wedding actually took place in Bourbon County:

In 1792, son Simeon appears on the tax list for the first time. He had married about 1790 or 1791 to Elizabeth Hopkins:

1806 - Hopewell was the earlier name of Paris. The children mentioned are the ones who were unmarried when John died:

In 1810, Rachel appears to have been living with her daughter Priscilla and son-in-law Thomas Eades. She would have been in her seventies by now: 1810 Bourbon Co. KY census, p. 84 [only Eades in Bourbon Co., KY] Thomas Eads One male over 45 Thomas One female over 45 Rachel (Perry) West One female 26-45 Priscilla b. 1769 was 41 years old One female 16-26 Martha Two males 10-16 Granville & Asa One female 10-16 Rachel Three males under 10 Thomas, John, & William One female under 10 Mary No slaves

Rachael died 1819 in Bourbon Co., KY, age 81:

John West and Rachel Perry West's children:

1. Thomas West, b. 1758, Rock Creek, Frederick Co., MD; m. c. 1776, MD to Margary? Keene?; he d. probably after 1840, Callaway Co., MO.

Thomas's birth was not recorded in the Rock Creek Church register in Montgomery Co., MD as were those of Reason, Rebecca, Simeon, and William. However, Rachel names him as her son when her daughter Margaret married the year after John's death:

19 Feb 1792, Nicholas Co., KY - February the 19th 1792 "I do hereby certify that Thomas West my son is guardian to my daughter Margeret---and I also give my consent to her marriage with Tomkins Barlow. Given under my hand and seal. Rachel West (seal) Witness Tho Eades

William's birth as a child of John and Rachel West was recorded in the register of the Rock Creek Church in Frederick Co., MD.

1787, Bourbon Co., KY - This William may have been him, although it's not clear that he ever came to Kentucky. He would have been about 25 when his parents came and may have been married and stayed behind in Virginia:

Middle child Priscilla was neither listed on the Rock Creek Church register in Frederick Co., MD like her four older siblings, nor is she among the five youngest who were named in their father's will. She and next sibling Sarah appear to be two sisters who married two brothers. Also, she was the only child in 1810 to have an older woman living in her household, presumably her mother Rachel:

6. Priscilla West, b. 28 May 1769, VA; m. 11 Aug 1787, Botetourt Co., VA to Thomas Eades [b. 25 Dec 1764, Montgomery Co., MD; d. 14 Dec 1838, Millersburg, Bourbon Co., KY]; she d. 21 Jun 1847, Paris, Bourbon Co., KY; buried Old Millersburg Cemetery, Nicholas Co., KY.

Four of Priscilla's children moved to St. Louis, MO where they lived near and interacted legally with Thomas H. West, son of Simeon West (son of John West and Rachel Perry).

Priscilla's daughter Rachael P. Rutherford reported on the 1880 census that her mother had been born in Virginia. Rachael was the only one of Priscilla's children to both be listed on the 1880 census and state where Priscilla was born.

Sarah was named as a daughter in her father John West's will, and her husband Robert Eades witnessed the will. She married the brother of Priscilla's husband:

7. Sarah West, b.c. 1771, MD or VA; m. 26 Feb 1790, Botetourt Co., VA to John Eades [son of Robert Eades and Mary __]; she d. after 1791;

Her birth date is calculated by assuming she was about age eighteen at time of first marriage.

John and Sarah may have come to Bourbon Co., KY as Sarah was named in her father's 1791 will there without any comment as to her living anywhere other than in Bourbon Co., KY. The will was witnessed by a Robert Eades, who may have been the Robert who was John's father:

Bourbon Co., KY wills: WEST, JOHN-A, 74-Wife, Rachel; son, John West, "land I dwell on adj town of Paris"; "my four children, Margaret, Martha, John and Roger West", "daughter Sarah Eades".
