Basil West, a pioneer squatter in 1805, was the first to live on the later site of the town of Westville. He was a poor man, but an honest and hard working pioneer. It was recorded that he and his family would not have been able to survive without the cow which Mr. West purchased, on credit, when he came to Mad River township.
