John 'The Immigrant Whiddon' Posted 03 Feb 2012 by ilkajb on Ancestry.com Trees

John 'The Immigrant' Whiddon arrived on the sailing ship The Transport which left from London on July 4th, 1635, and sailed into the southern branch of the Elizabeth River, the same river John Smith had sailed on just 25 years prior.

In 1635 Virginia was no longer an outpost of England but was home to the colonists. John disembarked in Lower Norfolk County, south of the James River. The land was relatively desolate and encounters with the Chesapean Indians could be dangerous.

Whiddon became an apprentice with John Yates to learn the trade of shipwright. The apprenticeship with Yates became a long and prosperous association with shipbuilding and trade. John had three children, John, William and Augustine. His eldest son John married John Yates' daughter, Joan.

The Whiddon Heritage, book by Hayes Whiddon Posted 06 Jan 2014 by jennifer whidden on Ancestry.com Trees

Almost ten years of genealogical research, on the Whiddon family, has provided a wealth of information that is the basis for an interesting story. The story in America began in 1635 when sixteen year old John Whiddon crossed the Atlantic and stepped onto Virginia soil. It continues through William, son of the immigrant, and covers nine generations. Although the author followed his direct line of descent, sufficient information is provided to permit other lines to be picked-up at any point. The story is told in semi-narrative form, with historical context, to make it human and personal. It covers the Whiddon family through time and place to give a clear picture of The Whiddon Heritage. Also, covered are the lines of descent of the other two sons of John the Immigrant.

This book has the most extensive coverage of the Whiddons of Tudor England ever published.

New book on the Whiddon family, it is extensively researched and has much new material. It contains a section on the Whiddons of Tudor England; this section includes the most expansive treatment ever published of Sir John Whiddon and his family in Chagford, Devon. Included in the book’s illustrations is a photograph of the impressive tomb of Sir John Whiddon. Also, included is an expanded version of the article published in 2007 in the journal of the Devon History Society about the exploits of Captain Jacob Whiddon.

The book has sufficient historical background to provide context to the Whiddon story that is written in semi-narrative form. The story of the Whiddons in America begins with John “The Immigrant” and continues with his son William and into the 20th century. The arthur follows his family line through each succeeding generation. His line runs through William,R.S. and his son Eli. For each generation all sibling and their spouses are identified so that other lines can be traced from that point.

The book also contains sections on the other sons of the immigrant, the line of John that remained in Virginia until the 19th century and the short line of Augustine.

This hardcover book is available from Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

The Whiddon family of Chagford, in the county of Devon, was very prominent in the 16th and 17th centuries. The family reached it’s zenith under Sir John Whiddon, Judge of the King’s Bench. Included are several generations of this very powerful and influential family. They served both the Church and the English legal system.

Captain Jacob Whiddon was a 16th century seadog, a privateer in the service of Sir Walter Raleigh. The mariners with whom he sailed included Sir Francis Drake and Sir Richard Grenville. Vivid accounts of his adventures are provided that includes the fight against the Spanish Armada and his voyage to South America to discover gold in El Dorado.

The book is well illustrated to illuminate the lives of the Whiddon forebears.

Notes for John "The Immigrant" Whiddon:
John was about 16 in 1635 when he embarked in the "Transport of London" to be transported to Virginia. He disembarked at Southern Branch (Lower Norfolk County), the busy shipbuilding village, on the Elizabeth River. He became an apprentice to John Yates, the shipwright.

In the Court of Lower Norfolk, February 1678, John was granted a Certificate (of importation) for 300 acres. He used this Certificate for the importation (land acquisition) for his two younger sons, William and Augustine. It did not include his older son, John. Being a shipwright, it is probable that he was by this time a prosperous man.
