- 2. MATTHEW WHIPPLE (Matthew-1), born about 1590, in Bocking, England; died September 28, 1647, in Ipswich Hamlet, Massachusetts; married 1st May 7, 1622, in Bocking, ANN HAWKINS, who died about 1643. She was the daughter of John Hawkins, and was the mother of all of Matthew's children.
- Matthew Whipple married 2nd, ROSE ( ___ ) CHUTE who died after November 13, 1646; she was the widow of Lionel Chute who came from Dedham, Essex, England, and died in 1645 in Ispwich, Massachusetts.

- 3. JOHN WHIPPLE (Matthew-2, Matthew-1), known as Lieutenant John, was born September 6, 1632, in Ipswich, Massachusetts; married 1st, SARAH KENT who died June 14, 1658; married 2nd, ELIZABETH WOODMAN, May 5, 1659; married 3rd, MARY STEVENS, July 21, 1663.

- Sarah, called eldest daughter in will; date of birth is not given in Ipswich records, so the identity of her mother is not certain. Because of identicalness of names one might assume that she was Sarah's daughter.

- 4. CAPTAIN JOHN WHIPPLE (John-3, Matthew-1, Matthew-1) was born in Ipswich, March 30, 1660; died there June 11, 1722; married 1st, HANNAH ___ who died October 20, 1701; married 2nd, April 14, 1703, JOANNA POTTER. Administration was granted to his only son John August 23, 1722. An agreement of settlement of the estate was made April 3, 1723, between John Whipple, junior, and Joanna Whipple, his mother-in-law.

MATTHEW WHIPPLE (John-3, Matthew-1, Matthew-1) was born in Ipswich, May 29, 1664; died there May 28, 1736; married DORCAS PAINE, daughter of Robert Paine, junior and Elizabeth (Reiner) Paine; Dorcas was born 1666 and died May 11, 1735. - Simon Tuttle, son of John and Joanna, who had been engaged in trading ventures in Barbadoes, became owner of the Comfort hill farm and made his home on the hill. His wife, Sarah, was the mother of twelve children. The eldest, JOANNA, whose name is recorded erroneously in the Vital Statistics as Hannah, born Sept. 4, 1664, married, first, . . . . . . PICKARD, second, EDMUND L. POTTAR of Rowley int. Nov. 20, 1701, and third, Capt. JOHN WHIPPLE Jr., April 14, 1703. Simon, the eldest son, was born Sept. 17, 1677. Following these were John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Abigail, Susanna, William, Charles, Mary, Jonathan and Ruth, the youngest, who was born on Aug. 16, 1685 and married Ezra Rolfe of Bradford, Sept. 17, 1728. Mr Tuttle died in January, 1691, but his widow survived forty years. She died on Jan. 24, 1731, aged eighty-six.

- Three of the sisters conveyed their 3-5 interest in the real estate of their late brother to their brother-in-law, Mark Haskell of Gloucester, April 13, 1727 (51:53) and Susanna Hale conveyed her fifth to him on Jan. 8th, 1730 (77:43). Their grandmother, Sarah, wife of Simon Tuttle, died as has been noted on Jan. 24, 1731/2, holding title to a third in her husband's estate, which had been set off to her. Her daughters, JOANNA WHIPPLE, widow of Capt. JOHN, and Susanna, single woman, quitclaimed their interest to Mark Haskell, July 6, 1732 (77:42); the grand daughters making similar conveyance (1731, 60:239, 240; 77:41; 1733, 77:42).
