John Whitaker, born 1694 in Warrick Co, VA, died before 1750 (when his widow married John Drewry). John Whitaker married Martha Gough, daughter of Rev. William Gough and Alice Thacker. John and Martha had eight children:

1. Richard Whitaker, b. 1720, d. 1794; m. Elizabeth Cary
2. Gough Whitaker, b. -?-, d. 1772; m. Martha Cary
3. Robert Whitaker, b. -?-, d. 1765; m. Sarah
4. John Whitaker, II, b. 1732, d. 1784; m. Olive Taylor
5. James Whitaker, b. -?-, d. 1789; m. Catherine Wiggin
6. William Whitaker, b. -?-, d. 1789; m. Elizabeth Wiggin
7. Dudley Whitaker, b. 1740, d. 1791; m. Mary Pearce
8. Martha Whitaker, b. -?-, d. -?-; m. Thomas Cary, Jr

All the sons of John Whitaker and Martha Gough left Virginia about 1740 and settled in Halifax and nearby counties in North Carolina. Robert, the third son, died in Halifax Co, and his sons went to Wake Co, NC.


GEDCOM Note

John Whitaker, Sr., born 1694, is the only child of Sheriff Richard Whitaker. His mother, Martha Pyland, died when John was small. His father married again but there are no known children from the second marriage. John, Sr. married Martha Gough and they had eight known children, seven sons and the youngest one a daughter. The oldest sons were young adults and the daughter about seven years old when John, Sr. died in 1749. The sons of John Whitaker, Sr. and Martha Gough Whitaker migrated south and west to North and South Carolina and their descendants were among pioneers who ventured into Georgia, Florida, Alabama and westward as land opened up for settlement.
