John Thomas White - Occupation listed as a "Gardener' on his Death Cert. Profession or Occupation of HIS father (WILLIAM FREDERICK WHITE) is listed as 'SHIPS CARPENTER'. Obituary - 1921. John Thomas White was born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia & came to Waimate NZ some 50 yrs ago. At that time, his little shingle roofed cottage stood on the site of the Waimate Hotel & all beyond that was bush. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, & in various forms of active employment. He was engaged in the construction of the railway line through the Waimate Gorge. Prior to that, for some years he was a mail coach driver in charge of the royal mail coach between Winchester & Waimate. Mr White also figured in the days of the big fire when for three days he was one of the fire fighters. He was well known throughout the district & esteemed by all who knew him. When the railway supplanted the mail coach, Mr White ran two threshing plants & of later years he confined himself to contracting. With the increase of years, Mr White had to relinquish the more vigorous work & took up fruit growing with much success, which he carried on to the present day. He was one of the oldest members of the Loyal Orange Lodge. He leaves a widow , 4 sons & 4 daughters.
