About John Whitefoord
A lengthy article from "The Mercury" of Monday 9 January 1888, describes John Whitefoord's contributions and relationship to the Smith family. After a stroke in 1886, this article follows his retirement from Judicial service of 54 years in the colony.

Published in "The Cornwall Chronicle" of Saturday 27 November 1858: " Law Appointment. — by the Australian papers, we perceive that tho office of Recorder and County Court Judge is filled by Mr. Whitefoord. This gentleman may be remembered by many in Leamington and its neighbourhood as having formerly studied for the probation of the law under our late respected townsman, W. V. Patterson. Esq., who also conducted at the same time the legal education of one of the leading counsel of our Midland Circuit, Mr. Sergeant Hayes. Mr. Whitefoord's tastes inclined to emigration, and after a long career of usefulness in the Magistracy, he has been raised to the judicial position he now fills
Mr. Whitefoord married a daughter of the late Robert William Elliston, whose eldest son, having also emigrated to Van Diemen's Land, has twice filled the office of Mayor at Hobart Town.— Leamington Courier, August 21st."

Fire reported in "The Mercury" of Friday 21 February 1862: "A fire broke out on Mr. Whitefoord's premises this morning, the stables and kitchen were destroyed, and the dwelling-house saved."........ and with more detail, in the "Launceston Examiner" of Saturday 22 March 1862: "ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES.. Between 2 and 3 o'clock on Thursday morning 20th the wooden range of out-buildings, consisting of stables, coach-house, and other offices, in the rear of the dwelling of John Whitefoord, Esq. of Invermay, were destroyed by fire."
(Note: It is not clear, from the above reports, which was the actual date of the fire, or whether there were two fires)

Published in the "Launceston Examiner" of Wednesday 23 November 1864: " The lnvermay Archery Society has been organised for the season, Johns Whitefoord. Esq, being again elected President, and Charles Thomson, Esq., and William Barnes, Esq.; first and second Captains. The members meet for practice on Mr. Whitefoord's lawn at Invermay, near Launceston, on each Saturday afternoon at half past three o'clock."
