At some stage John WILLIAMS lived in Manchester
15th August 1863 - John WILLIAMS joined the 4th detachment of the 1st Battalion of the 12th Regiment (East Suffolk) as a Private. Reg. No. 1044. He had been a labourer prior to enlistment. The 12th were involved in the Waikato wars from November 1863, fought at Rangiriri, and were later stationed on the East Coast.
2nd May 1867 - John Williams deserts the regiment. He had been in confinement from 16th April, had spent 18 military days in military prison, nine days in confinement cell in the guard room, and had forfeited 27 days pay. He had formerly forfeited pay for two periods of 148 days and 30 days.
John Williams and May Holland were married in 1868, in the house of Thomas Holland, Auckland, New Zealand.
New Zealand Herald 30.7.1872 reports a claim by M. Enright against John Williams of 4 shillings for trespass of cattle at Waiuku
John Williams died 27 Sep 1874, Tuakau, Waikato, drowned as a result of canoe accident near Tuakau. He is buried in Tuakau Redoubt Cemetery; block: Redoubt; Row: Graves; Plot: 267. A memorial has been placed on his grave, with the inscription -
