Notes

  1.  H-W Bulletin v 8 no 1. His wife is sometimes thought to be Lavinia but the daughter of John and Elizabeth Rogers of Charles City Co, Ann Whitt, is available and so coopted- Wills and Deeds 1725-31, p 298. Wills and Deeds, p 298, 1725-1731 shows the will of John Rogers naming his daughter Anne, the wife of John Witt.(Actually, from Cahrels city Co VA Wills and Deeds, 1984, Weisiger p 40 shows "to daughter Ann Whitt, wife of John Whitt, livestock and items". (The Bates Family of Old Virginia (BFOOV))
  2.  John Witt’s wife is unidentified. His wife Elizabeth was alive in 1751 but she appears in no record thereafter. The fact that she used “P” as her mark leads to speculation that her maiden name might have begun with that letter (unless it was the Latin “R”). A favored candidate of some researchers is Humphrey Parrish, who signed with a “HP” mark, but there is no persuasive evidence of her maiden name. (Bob's Filing Cabinet)
