John lived in Masterton where he trained and raced horses. Martha left John not long after John jnr was born living firstly in Wellington and then returning to Australia. John sustained bad head injuries after a fall from a horse, but was lucky that a German Specialist/Surgeon was visiting New Zealand at the time. He performed surgery on John which was successful. The operation cost John a lot of money and left him virtually penniless. John returned to Ashburton where he lived until he died in 1930. While living in Ashburton he worked as a drover and a rabbiter. His two loves were his dog and his house.
