About John Henry Zumwalt

Eugene was a bartender, despite the fact his uncle Daniel Kindle Zumwalt was a leading Prohibitionist. Also, it looks like he probably knew little of his birth-mother, despite carrying Brooks as his middle name. On the 1900 Census, he doesn't know what state his mother was born in. But his father must not have forgotten Vienna as he chose to buried next to her instead of his later wife Clementine Graham.

SLOUGHHOUSE or PIONEER CEMETERY (SH)
One must stop at the Sloughhouse Inn restaurant, just off Highway 16 at
Sloughhouse, to request a key to access this locked and gated historic cemetery,
located a short distance down the same access road, and southeast of the Inn.
Interred in this sunny cemetery are some of the area's most renowned pioneers
and their families. Their contributions are noted by the 'Daughters of the Utah
Pioneers' plaque # 382, which reads:

Thomas Rhoades (Rhoads) and others left Iowa as an exploring group with
permission of Mormon authorities, travelled with Donner, Reed party from
Missouri - Hastings cut-off. Rhoades, wife and 14 children arrived Sacramento
Valley October 1846, the first Mormon family to come overland. Settled near
Cosumnes River. Two sons, John and Daniel were in the first Donner rescue group.
Wife Elizabeth died 1847, buried at Benicia. Thomas, four children returned to
Utah 1849. Family contributed greatly to Western U.S. history. About 200
descendants and friends buried here. Deeded to Daughters of Utah Pioneers by
Percy Westerberg.
