=========================================== http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.smith/21155/mb.ashx Reuben SMITH/Sarah Beach CLARK, Adams Co., Ohio johnmccoy66 Posted: 8 Oct 2003 3:16PM GMT Edited: 3 Jan 2005 5:17PM GMT Surnames: SMITH, CLARK, STARN, THOROMAN, CHAPMAN, McADOW, NEWMAN, ALDRICH, McCOY, ZUMWALT, GARMAN, HUFF
New information has come to light concerning several branches of this family. It's time to discuss the new information and to dispose of some misinformation. NEW INFORMATION: 1. (Not really new, but new to me and evidently to most of you, too) Nancy Ann (ZUMWALT) HUNT (1831-1904) left an account of her life (Overland Monthly, April, 1916 issue, "By Ox-Team to California") that names her great-grandparents as Oliver SMITH and Sarah HERRICK. I believe this is the ONLY account that has been passed down within the family that has yet come to light. Note that Oliver is a name that has been used several times in the next few generations. One possible record of this Oliver could be a tax list from 1796, Luzerne Co., PA, which includes Oliver SMITH and Reuben SMITH. This lead needs to be investigated. 2. John B. SMITH (1792-1849), eldest son of Reuben and Sarah, with his family, have been found in Davis Co., IA. He may have been born in New York. John B. SMITH served in the War of 1812 from Ohio, and his heirs obtained a bounty land warrant for his service. There will be more news about this family soon. Descendants participated in some of the more colorful adventures of the Wild West. 3. Federal land patents and other records for several descendants have been found in California. Land entry case files for these patents are expected to settle a number of questions, such as the purported Civil War service of William Theodore Freylinghuysen SMITH (1844-1917?) that we could never find. . . . THE FIRST THREE GENERATIONS, with spouses, are listed below, to the extent that they are known. Please help me correct any errors or omissions! I've been working on this family for about 30 years. This is the first time that so many clues have turned up at once! 1 Reuben Smith b. 08 jun 1767 MA? d. 25 sep 1840 Adams Co., OH., m.
