About John de Legh of Norbury Booths

Additional Curator's Note

THIS John Leigh is the founder of the Leigh of Booths line. According to which source you read, his surname may be spelled Leigh or Legh (by this time, his line was not using Norman prefix de). His father was William Venables, but, as happened more than once in the Leigh line, the husband either adopted the Leigh name or allowed his children to carry the Leigh name, to keep the Leigh estates in the family. To show the lineage, I have added Venables in the maiden name field. John assumed the name of his maternal grandfather but retained the arms of Venables.

This John Leigh was born in Cheshire and lived most of his life there, purchasing in about 1300 Norbury Booths, a country manor in the vicinity of Knutsford, as the family seat. By his second wife, Ellen de Corona, he came into possession of Adlington. John had four sons, some of whom founded branches of the Leigh line. Those sons and their lines are John, the Lees of Booth; Robert, the Leighs of Adlington, Lyme, Ridge, Stoneleigh, Stockwell, etc.; and William, Isall in Cumberland. -- Maria Edmonds-Zediker, Curator, 07/10/2011

John Venables, who, as previously stated, assumed his mother's maiden name of Legh. He became the owner by purchase of Norbury Booths, and married some time previous to 1315 Ellen de Corona, who inherited the Adlington estates under the settlement of her grandnephew, Thomas de Corona. Four sons were born of this marriage, three of whom became the founders of distinct houses : John, ancestor of the Leghs of Booths; Robert, to whom, at the death of his mother in 1352, the manor of Adlington reverted under the Corona settlement, and who thus became progenitor of the Leghs of Adlington, Lyme, Ridge, Stoneleigh, Stockwell, &c.; William, founder of the line of Isall in Cumberland, and from whom descended Sir William Legh, Bart., Lord Chief Justice of England; and Peter de Legh, who in right of his wife Ellen, daughter and heir of Philip de Bechton, acquired the Bechton estates, which were in turn conveyed by his two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth, to their respective husbands, Thomas Fitton, of Gawsworth, and John de Davenport, of Henbury.

Venables Genealogy Report Dick Purser shows John born about 1267 and dying about 1324.

John de Legh, eldest son of Agnes and William, purchased of William de Tabley Knotsford Booths cum Norbury Booths in 21 of Edward I, 1300. He married Elena de Corona, daughter of Thomas de Corona of Adlington, which Thomas, in 10th of Edward II, 1317, obtained a portion of the Manors of Little Neston and Hargreaves against Henry de Manchester, settled successively on Robert. William and Peter, sons of this John Legh and wife Ellena. From the omission of John, eldest son of John Legh, there can be no doubt that he was a son by a former marriage, but the name of this first wife is unknown. Beside these sons there was a son Gilbert, and they were all born before 1317. See: http://todmar.net/ancestry/legh_main.htm

John's mother had been married twice before marrying John's father, firstly to Richard de Lymm and secondly to William de Hawardyn. Note that John took his mother's maiden name rather than that of his father. Also note that his mother was an heiress and his grandfather, great grandfather and three more generations back were all Lords and presumably very wealthy. Interestingly his great, great, great, great grandfather was named [Lord Hamon de Venables de Legh], restoring Venables the last name of John's father to the De Legh name.

Sir John Legh of Boothes was the son in law of Sir William de Baggiley, who had married as his second wife, Isabel the daughter of Sir William, and is mentioned in this deed: Isabel was Sir John Legh of Boothes second wife.

Sir William Baggiley was Lord of Baggiley 13 Edward II [1319], and John Baggiley his son made a foofment of the manor of Baggiley in Cheshire, and of his manors of Hyde and Leveshulme in Lancashire unto Sir John Legh of Boothes near Knutsford, covenanting that Sir John shall settle them on the said John Baggiley and the heirs male of his body, and for default of such, then to settle the manor of Hyde on Sir John Hyde and his heirs, and to settle the manors of Baggiley and Leveshulme upon William, John, and Geoffrey, sons of the said Sir John Legh, and to the heirs male of their bodies in order one after another, the remainder to Thomas, son of Richard Massy; then to John, son of Robert Legh, then to William, son of Piers Legh, then to Robert, son to Robert Massy of Kelshall.
