About John (the younger) Trelawney, MP
John de Trelawny, Esq., was the second son of Sir John de Trelawny, Knight, and his wife Agnes Trogodeck. He was also known as John Trelawny of Tresserett and as John Trelawny of Brightorre. He married Joan Helligan. There were three known children, John, Helnath and Joan.
John de Trelawny served as burgess for Truro in the parliament held February 12, 1451 [27 Henry VI]. He served as Sheriff of Cornwall c.1462 [1 Edw IV], and in c.1475 [14 Edw IV], had a quietus (or cessation) from the collection of tenths and fifteenths in Cornwall granted by Parliament. A covenant and annuity was recorded between him and Thomas, Earl of Devon, in 1494 [33 Henry VI].
He left a will dated November 14, 1509, which was proven at Lambeth on January 26, 1510. He held the estates of Tretheake, Trethinna, Gonan, Hurdon Parva, Hurdon Magna, Bodwhydock, Trem, Lettra, Treylodock, Penhall and Tregree. Through his marriage to Joan Helligan, he inherited the manor at Treferret, which had long been a Halligan property.
From these facts we can deduce that John de Trelawny was born before 1431 and died between 1509 and 1510.
Children of John de Trelawny, Esq., and wife Joan Helligan:
- John Trelawny, who married (1) Blanche (sometimes written as Candida) Powna, daughter and co-heir of John Powna of Powna (written as Pownde in some texts). He married (2) Jane Holland, daughter of Sir Robert Holland and widow of John Kendall.
- Helnath Trelawny, the second son, is only found in the Cornish Visitations, but is listed there as one of the executors of his father's estate.
- Joan Trelawny, who was named in her father's will.
