About Jollan de Nevill, II
Evidence from "Early Yorkshire Charters" (vol. 5, pp. 153-157) has suggested that rather than being a Neville in the male line, Jollan's father (aka Joscelin) was actually the son of Roscelin fitz Richard fitz Losoard of Lincoln, and his mother was an unnamed daughter of Gilbert de Neville of Ashby (whose three sons, Geoffrey, William, and Walter, were probably the same persons of the same name who witnessed the marriage contract for Jollan de Neville and Amphelise of Rolleston).
Surnames being as fluid as they were at this period, this is plausible and makes better chronological sense than trying to force him into the direct Neville line.
NOTE: This would not have been the only time the "Neville" name passed down the female line - the main branch was apparently founded by a Border lord who married a Neville heiress.
Jollan de Neville m. Amphelicia de Rolleston c. 1175 (Early Yorkshire Charters, above). Presumably he was adolescent or adult at the time.
He has no right to the Raby rose either.
