About Jonar Larrow
- Birth: 15 SEP 1674 in St. Joseph, Quebec Colony, New France
- Death: 1760 in Schoharie, Schoharie County, New York. Alternately: Lancaster, Pennsylvania Colony, British North America
His first name may be either Leonard or Jonar or Jonas. His middle name may be Remi, Tremi, or Treigny. Treigny seems the most likely as it is the name of the town in France where the Roi family may have originated. So it seems likely that his family name may have been "Roi de Treigny". His last name is found as Roi, Le Roi, Le Roy, and Leroy, depending on the degree of Anglicization.
Leonard-Remi Le Roy was born Catholic but married in the Dutch Protestant Church of New York as Jonar Larua. He later became known as Jonas Laraway and is the father of the Larroway line of New York and Ontario (the originator of the Larroway Loyalist line in Ontario).
The listing at his marriage is:
Jonas LARROY born in Cubeck [Quebec] & Maria OEYCKE [Usiele] born on Staaten Eyland [Staten Island], res. in Packkeepsen [Poughkeepsie] 28 Sept 1703, Kingston RDC.

Leonard ("Jonar") was baptized at the Catholic Church in Quebec City, Quebec, on 15 Sep. 1674. He was the son of Simeon LeRoy and Claude "Blandina" DesChalets. He relocated to Kingston, Ulster Co., NY, with his parents about 1681-2. His name was written by the Dutch as Jonar Lerwa/Larrowa, etc., based on how it sounded.
He married Maria "Oeycke" Uzielle on 28 Sep. 1703 in Kingston. They relocated to near Albany, Albany Co., NY, and then Schoharie, old Albany (now Schoharie) Co., about 1725-29. They both joined the Reformed Dutch Church there, where Leonard/Jonar subsequently became a deacon.
"Jonar" and Maria had at least 10 children together, as follows:
- Peter (bapt. 3 Sep. 1704)
- Blandina (bapt. 1 Feb. 1708)
- Cornelia (born about 1709)
- Simeon (born about 1711)
- Jonas (bapt. 19 Sep. 1714; died an infant)
- Jonas (bapt. 24 June 1716)
- Jan/John (bapt. 19 Oct. 1718)
- Maria (bapt. 4 June 1721)
- David (bapt. 6 Oct. 1723)
- Isaac
- George
The first child, Peter, was baptized at Kingston. The other baptisms shown took place in Albany. The last two children were probably born in Schoharie.
The date of Jonar's death is not known, but it occurred sometime after 1750, presumably in Schoharie. His memorial is placed here (tentatively), in the burial ground of his church.
