About Jonas Brown
Find A Grave # 36935097 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/36935097/jonas-brown
Jonas Brown was born and raised in Washington County, Florida, located in the vicinity of Miller Ferry. He moved to Little Bayou, which was also known as "Warrington."
When he was around twenty-two years old, the military purchased the area around Miller's Ferry and implemented what is known to us today, as the United States Naval Air Station and Museum.
He later then moved to Pensacola Florida, where he married Mary Wingate on February 19, 1882. The Browns had eleven children Margaret, Ellen, Isbella, Elnora, George, Eliza, Justina, James, Leon, Mary and Francis.
In concordance with family history, Jonas was familiar with Pensacola, because he had visited there as a child during the Civil War.
It was surmised that Jonas and a cousin worked their way to Pensacola aboard a stream boat that traveled between Vernon and Pensacola, Florida every week.
Vernon was known as the "World leading Gopher leading shipping port." Live gophers and turtles were shipped to Pensacola from Vernon on a weekly basis and became a gourmet delicacy in Pensacola.
Jonas' job ventures included farming, working at the Naval Yard and Mill worker.
