Jonas was the fourth of eight children born to John More and Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor More. He was raised at Catskill, New York where his father was a prominent farmer. When Jonas was eight-years of age, and the Revolutionary War had ended, the family returned to Delaware County, New York where his family founded the settlement of Moresville. Moresville is now known as Grand Gorge. Jonas married to Deborah Person in 1796. They made their home on 420 acres on the east branch of the Delaware River, just above the village of Roxbury. He built a large home at that place in 1818. Jonas was enterprising and successful, social and jovial. He was liberal to the church and to the poor. He was interested in politics and was elected supervisor of Roxbury in 1831, 1833, 1834, and 1842. In 1839, he represented Delaware County in the New York Assembly. Jonas and Deborah were the parents of nine children; James P. More who died in infancy, John Person More, Betsy Taylor More, Jane More, Hiram More, Solomon More, Henry McKinstry More, Jonas More, and Mary More.
