About Jonas A Nightingale

Our dear brother and uncle, Jonas A. Nightingale, was born January 28, 1897, a son of Andrew and Mary Wedel Nightingale. After much intense suffering, he departed this life on January 14, 1978, at the L.D.S. Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah, reaching the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 14 days. Death resulted from complications of old age.
He received his education and grew to manhood on his parents' farm in the Lone Tree community, near Galva, Kansas
Jonas was united in marriage to Garnett While, July 16, 1925, in McPherson, Kansas. This home had the privilege of enjoying one adopted son, Tommy Joe, bringing them much happiness. But the unforeseen hand of fate accidentally claimed his life at the tender age of fifteen.
Jonas was employed as a mechanic by the Greyhound Bus Lines and was a veteran of World War I. His occupation and adventurous disposition took him away from this community, and he made his home in Pocatello, Idaho, since 1931. It was here that he met Alice Averett. They were married November 4, 1950, at Elco, Nevada, sharing the joys and sorrows on the pathway of life together for fifteen years. Her passing brought him many lonely hours.
We remember him as a cheerful, kindhearted brother and uncle, always enjoying his visits back to Kansas. Life had not always been easy for our brother, especially living alone the last twelve years. He has appreciated all who came to visit him, especially was he thankful for his step-granddaughter Geraldine who helped brighten his days. She often cleaned his house, fixed good meals, and took care of his other needs.
The last several years of failing health drew his thoughts heavenward, realizing he was in the evening of his life. He wanted to set his spiritual house in order. His last concern and many prayers were for the saving of his soul, asking for prayer and guidance of those who came to see him. We commit him to a merciful, compassionate, heavenly Father, who hears all prayers and does all things right.
Surviving him are three sisters: Mrs. Mabel Koehn, Fairview, Oklahoma; Ida Decker, McPherson, Kansas; Mary Nightingale, Shiloh Manor, Canton; one step-granddaughter, Mrs. Geraldine Neeser, Pocatello, Idaho; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Preceding him in death are his companion, one son, his parents, five brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services were conducted on January 18, 1978 in the Lone Tree Mennonite Church by Min. Herman Nightingale and Min. Roger Unruh. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.
