Jonathan Andrews, eldest son of Benjamin, Jun. of Southington and Elizabeth Gridley, his wife, was born 4th April, 1715. He married 5th June 1735 Susannah Richards, daughter of Thomas and his wife, Abigail Turner. Susannah was born 12th May, 1718, at Hartford. Jonathan Andrews located in Flanders district, in Southington, where Austin Gridley now (1868) lives. They were both admitted to the church in Southington Oct. 19th, 1735. He is called Lieut. Jonathan on the record. In 1779, Jonathan was appointed with the Deacons to confer with Rev. Mr. Robinson, to agree upon a church covenant, confession, and discipline.

Jonathan died 2nd Dec. 1797 in his 83dyear. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Southington, Hartford Co., Conn. FindAGrave.Susannah, his widow, died 6th Feb. 1809, aged 91 years. Jonathan's estate was settled by his son, Jonathan [Jr.] in 1801; to Susannah, the widow, one-third; to Josiah, Ozias, Jonathan, Lois Hart, Jemima Dunham, Susannah Gillet and to son Benjamin's children.

Children of Jonathan Andrews [Sr.] and Susannah Richards Andrews:

1. Lois, eldest daughter and child of Jonathan of Southington and his wife Susannah Richards, was born 30th June, 1736, baptized in Southington, 4th July, 1736, married 18th Nov., 1756, David Clark, son of David Clark and his wife Hannah Woodruff of Farmington. Lois's husband David Clark died 5th of Dec, 1775 aged 42, when second she married, on 8th Dec 1791, Amos Hart, eldest son of Deacon Thomas of Southington. Lois received a portion of her father's estate in 1801, and was at that time called Lois Hart. She died of fever, 26th August, 1811, aged 75 years, one month, twenty-six days. She was the third wife of Amos Hart. Her children by her first husband David Clark, were Elisha, Muriel, Salmon, Hila, Loly, Lucy, Statira, Lois. Amos Hart died 10th April 1798, aged 76.

2. Josiah Andrews, eldest son of Jonathan of Southington and his wife Susannah Richards, was born 30th Nov., 1740, baptized in Southington, 9th Nov., 1740, married 6th Jan., 1762, Rebecca Bishop, born 12th June, 1741, at New Haven ; she died 21th Oct., 1803, aged 62. He to Congregational church, in Southington, 27lh March, 1803, when second, he married 7th March, 1805, widow Ruth Lewis, of Bristol; her maiden name, Purnielee; she widow of Royce Lewis, and died 5th Dec, 1829, aged 69, when third, he married 8th August, 1822, widow Mary Sanderson, born 21st of Dec,; 1761, at Cheshire, who died 11th April, 1829, aged 68; she was insane, and cut her own throat. He died 12th Ootobcr, 1828, aged 87 year*, ten' months, twelve days. His grave-stoue is on the hill, where the first meeting-house in Southington, stood. Also the graves of his three wives. He lived on the west road, leading out of Flanders street, in Southington, on the north side, where Lewis now (1868), lives. He was strongly marked with red spots on his face. The estate of Josiah's widow, Ruth Lewis Andrews, of Southington, was distributed 23d Feb., 1825, by Asahel Cowles, and Noah Lewis, viz., to Abraham Lewis, $7 j to Levi Lewis, $7; to Sylvia Tyler, $7; to Ruth P. Hough, $7; to Norman Lewis, $7.

3. Ozias Andrews, second son of Jonathan, of Southington and his wife Susannah daughter of Thomas Richards, was born 20th March, 1742, baptized 20th March, 1742, at Southington, Conn.. He married 28th Dec, 1768, Ann Nott, of Berlin, Conn., before Rev. Samuel Clark, of Kensington parish. They removed in 1781 to Richmond, Mass. where he became a prominent member of the Methodist church, of that place; and 7th June, 1812, administration was granted on his estate, to Jonathan Andrews, of said town, yeoman; and John Bacon, Esq., Zebulon Bacon, and Abner West, jun., were made appraisers to the estate, the amount of which was $523.33; it was returned to court 14th July, 1812, and the court ordered so much personal properly sold as will pay the debts and expense, and 1st June, 1813, was set to widow Anna Andrews, $300; the balance $97.118, to be divided equally between Selah; the heirs of Leonard, deceased; Candace wife of Daniel Dunbar; Chester; Polly wife of Thomas Curtice; Jonathan; Lucina wife of William Benton; and Roxana Andrews, to wit, each $24.74 cents, seven milk, to be paid in articles of the inventory, at appraisal.

The four eldest of their children were probably born in Southington, for their births are found on the records of the town of Farmington, to which Southington then belonged, as a parish. Ozias died 2d April, 1812, aged 70; his wife Ann Nott Andrews died 24th Jan. 1839, aged 92, at Richmond, Mass.

Ozias's occupation was farming. When they removed in 1781, the mother carried Mary, then only a few months old, in her arms, on horseback, and Candace between the horns of the saddle, and Chester on a pillion behind. Selah and Leonard, rode on the cart, with the goods; the distance some 80 miles. The father had served for a time in the Revolutionary War.

4. Jemima, third daughter of Jonathan of Southington and his wife Susannah dau. Thomas Richards, was born 26th May, 1745, baptized 26th May, 1745, at Southington, married 6th Feb., 1764, to Cornelius Dunham, of Gideon, of Southington. She lived in Queen Street, at the north part of the town. Their children were, first, Lavinia Dunham, died single; grave in Queen street; second, Polly Dunham, married Eiisha Langdon; third, Samuel Dunham, married 4th Feb., 1798, Lucy Ariail (Bristol church record); he died 26th Sept., 1811 ; she married second, Abijah Hart; fourth, Nancy Dunham, married Levi Curtiss; fifth, Jemima Dunham, married Chester Pratt; sixth, Diadama Dunham, married Asahel Puck; seventh, Sally Dunham, manic 1 Nathaniel Root; eighth, Chuuncey Dunham, born 19th March, 1776, married 22d Nov., 1813, Rosiiuna Root; second, Sylvia Langdon; he living at this date, August, 1868, and is over 92 years old, and active, and lives on the old home of his father.

5. Benjamin Andrews, third son of Jonathan, of Southington, and his wife, Susanna, daughter of Thomas Richards, born 7th Oct., 1717, baptized at Southington, 11th Oct., 1717, married Patience Boyington, who died 24th Feb., 1774, when second, he married Mary Barnes, daughter of Samuel, and his wife, Temperance Bushnell, and sister of Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Andrews. Benjamin died of consumption, 4th June, 1786, aged 39, when Mary, his widow, 4th September, 1786, was appointed guardian to Patience, Joel, Chauncey, and Benjamin. She second, married 2nd Nov., 1787, Capt. Hezekiah Root, son of John. Benjamin Andrews was by trade and occupation a blacksmith, and located quite at the north extremity of Southington, east of the main road and "Pond river," south of the residence of the late Samuel North, on the west side of that road, and near the south line of Farmington. His inventory was £474 14s. Ad., and Josiah Andrews was made administrator. Property distributed to Mrs. Mary Root, to Beriah, to Joel, to Chauucey, to Patience, to Benjamin, and in 1788, Josiah Andrews was made guardian to Beriah, the eldest son. Mrs. Mary Root was a member of the Congregational church in Southington. She died in Plainville, but was buried by the side of her first husband, 10th March, 1828, in the Hill cemetery, of Southington; (see the burial record of that town.)

  • 688. Benjamin, born 23d of December, 1784, married 8th June, 1808, Polly Bradley, of Southington.

6. Abigail, second of the name, and daughter of Jonathan, of Southington, and Susannah Richards, his wife, born 29th October, 1749, baptized 5th Nov., 1749, at Southington, married 9th Feb., 1769, Elisha Woodruff, of Hezekiah, of Southington. She died the 1st May, 1771, aged twenty-one years, seven months, two days, leaving one daughter, Amy, born 6th Nov., 1769.

7. Susanna, youngest daughter of Jonathan, of Southington, and his wife, Susanna Richards, born 10th August, 1752, baptized 16th August, 1752, married 28th December, 1780, Josiah Gillet. She died in 1826, aged 74 years.

8. Jonathan Andrews, son of Jonathan, of Southington, and his wife, Susanna Richards was born 28th May, 1756, baptized 12th June, 1756. He married 16th May 1782, Ruth Deming, daughter of Elisha, and his wife Mary ___ . Ruth was born 27th Nov., 1756. Jonathan was administrator on his father's estate, in 1801, and himself died 27th Dec, 1806, aged 49 years, 6 months, 29 days. She died 11th Oct., 1830, aged 73 years, 10 months, 14 days. He was a "minute-man," in the time of the Revolution; was at the burning of Fairfield, Conn., and had a horse shot under him during the retreat. He lived on the old home of his father, in Flanders district, in Southington.
