Jonathan Dunham was born in 1658, in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, and died in 1711, in Edgartown, Dukes, Massachusetts.. He was the son of Jonathan and Mary (Cobb) Dunham. Jonathan was married twice, having a son by his first wife. Jonathan's second wife was Esther (Norton) Dunham. Together, Esther and Jonathan also had a son by the name of Jonathan, born in 1691.

Jonathan Dunham was the son of Jonathan Dunham and Mary Cobb. He first married Unknown and had Capt Jonathan Dunham. Jonathan married 2nd Esther Norton and they had a boy, Jonathan, born 1691. This Jonathan died before Oct 1711.

Online sources indicate that Jonathan DUNHAM of Sharon, CT, was descended from Jonathan DUNHAM whose probate was filed in Dukes Co., MA, 28 Mar. 1745/6. (This is most likely Capt Jonathan who dies in Sharon Ct 1745 and will would have been probated in old and new places he lived and owned land) See Charles BANKS' "History of Martha's Vineyard" and "The American Genealogist" Volumes 34-36 & 44, articles on Dunham by Mrs. John E. BARCLAY. Mrs. BARCLAY shows evidence that the first Jonathan DUNHAM of Plymouth Colony (ca. 1631 - 18 D 1717, Dukes Co.) m1. 1655, Mary DELANO, & m2. 1657, Mary COBB. Jonathan DUNHAM was mentioned regularly in the Plymouth records from 1651 to 1665 and again in 1670 - 1680, though he spent time at Middleboro and Falmouth before he moved to Dukes County ca. 1684.

The second Jonathan DUNHAM was b. ca. 1658, Plymouth. Mrs. BARCLAY says he was the one that had probate in Dukes Co., Mar. 1745/6. It was PROBABLY Jonathan, b. ca. 1684, s/o Jonathan and his first wife, that went to Sharon, CT. However, this is puzzling: History of Sharon, CT, says that the first death recorded there was that of Miriam, wf/o Wm. GOODRICH, 22 Apr. 1740. The following also died the same season: Asa ROOD, David SKINNER, Mary SKINNER, Hezekiah KING, Benj. FULLER, & Jonathan DUNHAM, Jr. Of course, in those days, you didn't have to be a son of a Jonathan to be called Jonathan, Jr., just younger than another Jonathan in the area. On FamilySearch, I did see one reference that the Jonathan b. ca. 1750/57 was son of Samuel, but the others all say he was son of Jonathan. Can you think of any clues to help solve the mystery
