About Jonathan Gibson, Sr.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gibson-2346

There is great debate over whether or not this Jonathan Gibson was the son, or the brother, or no relation at all of the "Edmund Gibson who married Jane Langhorne and became a bishop of London." [1] And although it is widely repeated in unsourced online genealogies, [2] there are compelling arguments against the relationship. [3] [4]

Jonathan Gibson, Sr. was born about 1670. He married in about 1699 to Elizabeth (Thornton) Conway, widow of Edwin Conway (abt. 1640-1698), and died about 1729 in King George Co., VA. Jonathan Sr.'s wife Elizabeth and their four surviving children are mentioned in his will dated 1727:[5]

  1. Jonathan Jr., b. abt. 1700
  2. Sarah, b. abt. 1702
  3. Alice, b. abt. 1704
  4. Rachel, b. abt. 1706

Jonathan Sr. is documented in King George County records, and his son, Jonathan Jr. is on record in Orange Co., VA.[6]

Jonathan Sr. & Elizabeth's daughter Rachel is often mistaken for the Rachel Gibson who married George Taylor, but that Rachel was the daughter of Jonathan Jr. and Margaret Catlett.[7]
