About Jonathan Hough

Jonathan HOUGH (15 Feb 1747 PA - ?1810? ) settled in Mifflin Co, PA, south of the Juniata River by 1790. He seems to have moved there from Bucks Co, PA. He had served in the Rev. War in the PA Militia under Capt. Robert GIBSON. There is some confusion about his birth year as he was put under guardianship of his uncle, Daniel HOUGH, on 7 Dec 1771, he still being under 21. This conflicts with the stated date of birth and also with the reputed marriage year of 1769, when he is said to have md (1) Elizabeth PUGH (9 Mar 1745 Philadelphia, PA - d from flu and buried 23 Aug 1777, New Britain twp, Bucks Co, PA), dau of David and Sarah (MORGAN) PUGH of Newton. Their four ch were:

Family

1. Sarah (17 Apr 1770 Bucks Co, PA - 19 Jan 1842) in Aug 1789 md Roger STAYNER (15 Jan 1753 Boston, MA - 17 May 1839) and lived in Juniata Co, PA. They had 12 STAYNER ch: Jonathan (1); Jonathan (2); William; Joanna; Elizabeth; Alice; Elizabeth; Ann H.; Joshua; Stewart; Ellis P.; and Mary H. 2. David (30 Aug 1771 Bucks Co, PA - May 1839 Wayne Co, OH) md (1) Elizabeth Bryan ( - d before 1839 Wayne Co, OH) and their ch incl David, Jr; John B.; Jane; William; Mary; Anna; Dennis; and Jonathan. David Hough, Sr, on 26 Mar 1839 in Wayne Co, OH, md (2) Mary LEWIS ( ) with Justice D. WHONSETLER performing the ceremony. It seems likely that David died soon after this marriage. 3. Jonathan, Jr (13 Jul 1773 Bucks Co, PA - 1846 Porter Co, IN) moved to Wayne Co, OH, with his brother David, thence to Porter Co, IN. He is said to have md (1) Eliza ???, a woman of German extraction whose ch usually spoke German. These ch were Elizabeth; Hannah; David; Ann McCoy; Thomas; Mary; Isabel; and Eliza W. Jonathan md (2) Jane ???, a woman of English extraction whose ch usually spoke English. These were John R.; Ellis P.; Jonathan; Sarah J.; Margaret W.; William; Peninah; Purdy; Rebecca; and Phillip. Some of the first family lived in PA and OH, while the second family settled in Porter Co, IN. 4. Hannah (12 July 1775 PA - ) ward of Ellis PUGH 20 Oct 1789. No further info. The above four were recorded in Bucks Co Court and Quaker records. Hannah in 1789 got Ellis PUGH as guardian, while Jonathan was guardian of the others. Jonathan HOUGH and Ellis PUGH petitioned the Court regarding 100 acres in Newton left by David PUGH.

5. Mary (13 Feb 1777, d. young). This was apparently the last child of Elizabeth. Jonathan HOUGH left Bucks Co before 1790. There is some confusion about the date of his next marriage. Dyer's Diary shows Jonathan HOUGH remarried 29 May 1784. Descendants of Jonathan HOUGH of Mifflin Co, PA, state that Jonathan HOUGH in 1778 md Ann BARTON (5 July 1755 PA - ) parents not known and show ch as:

Carson ch were: There is confusion about Jonathan HOUGH's birth date, his marriage dates or number of marriages, and the list of his children. He could have md three times, or there could be two Jonathan HOUGH individuals involved. More research is required to resolve these problems.

Hough lineage seems to be Jonathan Hough and two or three wives of PA; prob. John and Hannah (Townsend) of Bucks Co, PA; John and Elinor (Sands) of England and PA; John and Hannah ( ) of England and PA;
