Biography

Jonathan Snow was born in July 1768 in Rochester, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. He was the last-born son of Mark Snow and his first wife, Hannah (Sears) Snow. Some family genealogies say that his mother died that year from complications following his birth but that he survived.[1]

On February 11, 1790, Jonathan married Lydia Hammett, b: August 18, 1771, in Middleborough, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Barnabas and Hannah (Braley) Hammett. Jonathan and his family left already-developed Rochester, Massachusetts, for the green wilderness of Montpelier, Vermont, where Jonathan had staked a claim in 1789, being one of the first 3 settlers there. Their first daughter, Hannah Snow, b. October 28, 1791, was the 2nd European child born there.[2]
