Jonathan Watson of Gloucester, Highgate House, a native of Bury, St. Edmunds in Suffolk, came to Virginia in 1767 to receive 2,500 acres left to him by his father.
His father and two sisters and two brothers had subsequently fled to England. One of his brothers had "been six years at William and Mary." He claimed slaves, a watermill and plantations on the Piankatank.
